After all, distilling rum in the arid northwestern part of the state doesn't exactly have the same appeal as, say, winemaking in the Verde Valley. But three years, three rums and one vodka later, Patt and company — his wife, mother and father — are doing well. All of his spirits are award-winning, but it's his agave rum that people are stockpiling. "You normally make tequila with agave, but it makes for a nice sipping rum, and it's really unique to Arizona," he says. As for Patt's own take on his day job? "I tell people, 'I'll shock you three times: One, we distill in Arizona. Two, we do it in Kingman. Three, it's actually good.'
