HOLBROOK

Hal Holbrook is a great actor. However, he's not the man for whom the town of Holbrook is named. That honor belongs to the first chief engineer of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, the line that led to the creation of Holbrook in 1881. When the trains came through, the town boomed. In 1912, a meteor exploded near Holbrook, spraying more than 16,000 space rocks over the town. But not even that could stop Holbrook's growth. It became the Navajo County seat in 1895 and was officially incorporated in 1917. When automobiles replaced trains as the nation's primary mode of transportation, Holbrook became a stop along Historic Route 66. Today, it's a hub for people traveling to nearby Petrified Forest National Park, a place that warrants praise. Just like Hal Holbrook. — Kelly Vaughn Kramer
