Named for the plentiful wild strawberries that early settlers found there, Strawberry has become a popular tourist destination, as well as a summer-home location for people who spend the cooler months in Phoenix or Tucson. It’s hard to argue with the climate — average monthly high temperatures range from the low 50s in December and January to the low 90s in July — or the proximity to outdoor hotspots. Strawberry is a stone’s throw from the Fossil Springs Wilderness, an 11,550-acre wonderland that’s one of the most diverse riparian areas in Arizona. Other nearby attractions include Blue Ridge Reservoir and Tonto Natural Bridge. And history buffs can check out the Strawberry Schoolhouse, a one-room log cabin built in the 1880s. It’s considered the oldest standing schoolhouse in Arizona.
