High-Country Hummers Event
Join researchers Saturday morning (July 31) as they band hummingbirds at Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area, near Springerville. The event features live hawks and owls, a bird-walk and a slide presentation. Explore the Sipe visitor center displays on wildlife, habitats, prehistoric culture and conservation. Barbecue & Dance
The White Mountain villages of Alpine and Nutrioso host this July 31 celebration that includes arts-and-crafts, delicious barbecue and a dance. The event takes place at the Nutrioso Community Center at the Old Schoolhouse. Information: 928-339-4330 or www.alpinearizona.com/events%2010.htm

Movies on the Square

Hamburger Fry

19th Annual White Mountain Bluegrass Music Festival; August 14-15; Pinetop-Lakeside; 928-367-4290; http://www.pinetoplakesidechamber.com/bluegrass_.asp. Enjoy bluegrass bands from around the Southwest, jam sessions, family entertainment, food and arts and crafts. Camping is available.

Prickly Pear Cactus Class; August 15, 28; Superior; 520-689-2811; http://ag.arizona.edu/bta/events.html. In Arizona, when prickly pear fruits ripen, it’s time to cool off with a fruity margarita or candy made from the juice of a cactus’ fruit. Learn how to extract the sweet juice from Opuntia cacti during this hour-long class at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum with Apache Junction author Jean Groen.

126th Annual World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo; August 20-22; Payson; 928-474-4515; www.rimcountrychamber.com. Grab your cowboy gear and head out to Payson for exciting rodeo events such as bareback-riding, steer-wrestling, team-roping and bull-riding. Rumor has it that if you don’t wear cowboy duds and look too much like a city slicker, you might get “arrested” by members of the town rodeo committee.

3Dfest: Drum.Dance.Didge…Heal!; August 20-22; Prescott; http://www.az3dfest.com. The first annual new world music festival is coming to Prescott. It will feature national, international and regional dance and music acts, including acts from Australia, India and L.A.

Four Corners Regional Chili Cook-Off; August 21; Alpine; http://www.alpinearizona.com. If you love chili, or have a special family recipe, come out for the chili cook-off competition and join chili fanatics from around the Southwest.

The Arizona Rough Riders Living History Presentation; August 21; Flagstaff; 928-779-4395; http://www.azstateparks.com/find/calendar.html#august. Come out to Riordan Mansion Historic State Park and experience the Spanish-American War era as it comes to life during this reenactment of the Rough Riders, the most famous “all volunteer unit” in the history of U.S. military. Learn about this time period, as Rough Rider re-enactors, dressed in authentic clothes and carrying 100-year-old guns, describe the events that took place.

9th Annual Absolute Bikes St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance Old-Fashioned Mountain Bike Race; August 21; Flagstaff; 928-779-5969; http://www.absolutebikes.net/flag_frset.html. Mountain-bike through the Coconino National Forest during this race, benefiting St. Mary’s Food Band. This race is for mountain bikers of all skill levels.

Edible & Medicinal Plants; August 22; Superior; 520-689-2811; http://arboretum.ag.arizona.edu/events.html. Learn about edible and medicinal plants at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum on this one-hour walk up the Curandero Trail. Some parts of the trail are steep and not accessible by wheelchair.

Summer in the Pines; August 22; Kingman; 928-757-3545. Cool off in the ponderosa pines at the arts-and-crafts festival held at the Haulapai Mountain Resort.

4th Friday Art Walk Weekend; August 27; Prescott; http://www.artthe4th.com. Take a look at Prescott’s art galleries during the 4th Friday Art Walk. All galleries stay open late and offer food, musical entertainment, artist receptions and painting demonstrations.

10th Annual Prescott Jazz Summit; August 27-28; Prescott; 928-771-1268; http://www.prescottjazz.com. Jazz-lovers won’t want to miss this event featuring nightly concerts, jazz workshops and performances with international jazz stars and local musicians.

The Grand Canyon Music Festival; August 27-September 12; Grand Canyon; 928-638-9215; http://www.grandcanyonmusicfest.org. The 27th annual classical music festival brings world-renowned artists for weekend performances and outreach and education programs in rural and underserved communities.

Annual Thunder Over the Coconino Fly-In; August 28; Valle; 928-635-5280; http://www.valleairport.com. Watch as homebuilt, war-bird and antique airplanes roar over the Grand Canyon’s Valle Airpor. You can also enjoy an auto show, chili cookoff, and antique tractor display during this fly-in, featuring the 1929 Ford Tri-Motor airplane.

Monarch Butterfly Field Trips; August 28; Superior; 520-689-2811; http://arboretum.ag.arizona.edu/events.html. Volunteer to search for, capture, tag and release monarch butterflies as part of a research trip with Boyce Thompson Arboretum’s education coordinator, Chris Kline.

19th Annual Family Cornfest, Arts and Crafts Fair; August 28-29; Phoenix; 602-231-0300; http://www.el-zaribah.org./. More than 60 arts and crafts exhibitors display their works during this event, featuring a fresh sweet corn lunch.

Elden Pueblo Public Field Day; August 29; Flagstaff; 928-527-3452; www.fs.fed.us/r3/coconino/forest-resources/archaeology/elden-pueblo/summer.shtml. Take an archaeology tour at the Elden Pueblo Heritage Site and participate in excavations, artifact analysis, primitive technologies and hunting games. Bring water, a hat, sunscreen and a lunch. Tours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
