The National Park Service typically offers a handful of fee-free days every year, but 2016 brings an even better deal for visitors.

On 16 days this year, the Park Service will waive entrance fees at national parks, monuments and recreation areas across the country. That's in honor of 2016 being the year the agency turns 100 years old.

This coming Monday, January 18, is the first fee-free day, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Other fee-free days in 2016 are April 16-24 (National Park Week), August 25-28 (Park Service birthday celebration), September 24 (National Public Lands Day) and November 11 (Veterans Day).

Arizona's most well-known national park, Grand Canyon National Park, noted in a news release that the fee-free days do not affect fees for camping, reservations, tours or concessions. And if you stay at a park past January 18, you'll need to pay the regular entrance fee for the rest of your stay.

Arizona is home to 22 national parks, monuments, recreation areas, historic sites and other designations. Some of them never charge an entrance fee! To find one, click here.
