A high-profile case of vandalism in the Sedona area was resolved last month with a $1,000 restitution payment.

Actress Vanessa Hudgens created an online firestorm a few months back, when the High School Musical star and her boyfriend left their mark — a heart with their names in it — on Bell Rock, then posted a photo of it to Instagram. Hudgens was cited for damaging a natural feature on U.S. Forest Service land, a misdemeanor.

The $1,000 in restitution was used by a volunteer group, Friends of the Forest, to scrub or sand Hudgens' handiwork off the rock wall, the Associated Press reported this month.

A federal magistrate approved the settlement agreement April 19, but it wasn't made public until the AP filed a records request this month.

As always, let's use this incident as a reminder to adhere to Leave No Trace ethics when out in Arizona's undeveloped areas. In doing so, you can make sure our state is just as beautiful for the next person who comes along.
