If you're an ancient-history buff and you're looking for something to do this weekend, you're in luck. The Verde Valley Archaeology Center is planning a free day of lectures, films and demonstrations this Saturday, October 17, to celebrate International Archaeology Day.

The center, located at 385 S. Main Street in Camp Verde, is expanding its hours, to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., for the celebration, which this year carries a theme of "Everything Mesoamerican."

Planned activities include demonstrations of Mata Ortiz painting by master artist Oralia Lopez; two films by the National Geographic Society, on archaeological sites in Peru and Central America; and a presentation by Dr. Jaime Awe, a Northern Arizona University professor who has conducted several major archaeological excavations.

Admission to the center is always free, and these special events are free as well, the center said in a news release. To learn more, visit the Verde Valley Archaeology Center's website or call 928-567-0066.
