A proposal has been made to raise fees at eight campgrounds near Payson.

Coconino National Forest officials are taking public comment on the proposal until October 15.

According to George Jozens, deputy public affairs officer for the Coconino National Forest, the increases are necessary to maintain campgrounds. The fees would go toward weekly tasks such as cleaning and trash removal, as well as annual maintenance including painting, repairs and replacements.

Jozens says it has been more than a decade since the last fee hike.

Proposed increases range from $5 per night for a single site to as much as $105 per night for a group site. The fees would take effect in spring of 2020, if approved.
