Applications are now being accepted for non-commercial river rafting trips at the Grand Canyon for 2020.

The National Park Service will be taking lottery permit applications until Tuesday, March 12, at noon. The winners of the lottery permits will be announced after March 15.

The permit allows people to raft the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon without using a commercial service. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have technical whitewater experience. There is a $25 fee to apply for a permit.

Winners have to make a $200 deposit for a small trip (one to eight people) or $400 for a standard trip (up to 16 people).

Those not chosen in the first round of the main lottery may still be chosen, as drawings are held later in the year to distribute permits for leftover or canceled trips.

You can apply for a permit through the Park Service's website.
