The Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department is implementing its annual fire ban earlier than usual this year.

Starting May 1, the use of campfires, charcoal grills and fire pits will not be allowed at camping sites and recreation areas within the county. Propane and gas grills can still be used in designated areas.

This ban usually goes into effect around Memorial Day, but an unusually wet winter has created more fire fuel, leading to dangerous conditions.

As of now, there is no end date for the ban, but that date is usually determined by monsoon activity. Violation of the ban can result in a citation.
