A description of this cover photo came from longtime Editor Raymond Carlson: "July is all about the land. The heat is in the desert, not heavy heat, but dry and crisp and light, broken by rain in the afternoon, the tardy rain that came late to the mountains but so welcome. The rain washes the dust from the trees and in the meadows the grass is turning green from the rain. In such a meadow by a little lake in the White Mountains Esther Henderson found the scene we present as our cover pictorial this month. The sheep are in the cool mountains for summer pasture and when autumn comes they will file their long way from the mountains to the green fields of the Salt River Valley for winter. Regular dudes, they are, following the weather and the green grass."
