The Arizona Department of Transportation has entered the final phase of rebuilding a section of U.S. Route 89 that was seriously damaged by a landslide two years ago.

The highway, in the Echo Cliffs area south of Page and north of the route's junction with U.S. Route 89A, has been closed since a 500-foot section buckled in February 2013.

ADOT crews now are building the foundation of a realigned 1,500-foot section of U.S. 89. That follows a six-month period when crews removed nearly 1 million cubic yards of rock to prepare for the new alignment.

The repaired highway is on target to reopen before the busy summer tourism season in Page and Lake Powell, ADOT said in a news release. Until then, travelers can use U.S. Route 89T (formerly Indian Route 20), which ADOT paved in 2013 as a short-term solution.
