Kartchner Caverns State Park is best known for its amazing network of underground caves. But officials at the park are letting visitors know there's plenty to do above ground, too.

The park is offering a series of guided hikes over the next few months. A ranger will take visitors on the challenging, 3.25-mile Ocotillo Trail, which winds through the foothills of the Whetstone Mountains. Rare birds, desert plants and views of several nearby mountain ranges are all part of the experience, the park said in a news release.

The Ocotillo Trail hikes are at 10 a.m. on March 30, April 27 and May 25. Hikers are advised to bring plenty of water and dressed appropriately. Dogs are welcome to join the hike as well.

Additionally, the park is hosting a Star Party and solar viewing on April 6. Kartchner Caverns was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2017, and its remote location makes it ideal for viewing stars, planets and other wonders of the night sky. The Huachuca Astronomy Club will have telescopes on hand for the event, which begins at 2 p.m. with the solar viewing. There's no additional cost for visitors who take a cave tour that day, or for campers in the park.
