Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, Alpine
Luna Lake is the largest campground in the Alpine Ranger District. Even during peak season, you’re likely to find a site here. Bordering its namesake lake, the campground is well developed and features a boat ramp, a tackle shop and plenty of motorhome and trailer parking.
Water recreation rules at Luna Lake, and fishing is particularly popular, thanks to regularly stocked rainbow trout. Wildflower meadows that surround a grove of ponderosa pines will appeal to campers who prefer to explore on foot, and wildlife-viewing opportunities, including elk and wild turkeys, abound.
Mountain biking and hiking trails criss-cross the area near the lake, and Blue River Road begins just across from the campground. The scenic route meanders into the heart of Blue Range Primitive Area. Back at Luna Lake, try to snag site 25 or 27 — they have the best views.
Campfire Tale: Luna Lake Wildlife Area provides a riparian habitat for birds, mammals, fish and amphibians, including bats, bald eagles, tree frogs, weasels and elk.

Directions: From Alpine, travel east on U.S. Route 180 for 3.8 miles to Luna Lake Recreation Area. Follow the gravel road (Forest Road 570) for 1.5 miles to the campground.
