Apache Leap

A THOUSAND braves stood forth to fight for the might of their liberty, The hope of Apache's haughty tribe, And the pride of its legendry. Full over a thousand years and more Their fathers had roamed the hills, And their's the plains and the wooded slopes, And the forest glades and rills. The mountain fortress had shielded them With their crested peaks of snow, Like giant sentinels act to guard The council-fires below. But a new sound wakened through glen and dell, And stirred their serenity, As the white hordes stormed the rugged steeps, With the screech of their musketry. From crag to crag, from pass to pass, Resounded the battle-cry, As the tribesmen rallied from every vale, To wage for their own or die. Through gaunted winter the cruel siege Recounted its sorry toll, And the caves and rocks were yawning graves For many a hounded soul. The streams were foul with gory tinge, And the plains were strewn with dead, Where a nation hewed her clansmen down As the eagles screamed o'er head.
A thousand braves stood forth to wage In pride of Apache youth, To wrest for all their own domain, Or perish at last for truth. In stark and rugged nakedness, They stood on the brink at bay, Untamed at the hands of a hungry foe, That snatched for a noble prey. Beyond the doom of the precipice Where it sheered to eternity; And old men stood at their old tepees And knew what the end would be. No altar flame to sanctify, Nor plaudit to score the pledge, As a thousand braves in one accord Plunged over the dizzy ledge. Unconquored they, though their bleaching bones Still whiten the sands below, For their children live and the race builds on Mid the haunts of the long ago.
