town to impress its citizens with the need for law observance. At this traffic premiere, 28 traffic law violators, as defendants, played important parts while the judge starred in the deciding role. An audience of 1,000 persons sat comfortably and displayed no envy for the actors.
Berkeley, California, takes great pains to see that any future president, senator or governor who may now be learning his A.B.C.'s in its schools isn't going to be wiped out by a traffic accident. Once a month every child in the elementary schools receives a personal letter from the police and traffic safety department. Each letter illustrates a particular lesson in safety. If Berkeley children learn their lessons and obey them, they are privileged to wear a special safety badge.
Getting your new automobile license in Wilmington, Delaware, also means that you will be given a free copy of "Safety Sally's Rules for Good Driving." This pamphlet contains a copy of the pertinent points in the traffic ordinance.
Statistics from Oakland, California, demonstrate that educational activities have results. Since starting its program, accidents by drivers between the ages of 16 and 20 have dropped by 33 per cent, officials state.
In Memphis, Tenn., the Traffic Commission is not arguing the point: "Are men better drivers than women." The Commission conducts a lady's driving school. No city can expect to solve its traffic problems, these reports show, by limiting its efforts to engineering and enforcement activities. Education is the factor which reaches the individual driver and pedestrian and makes him willing to co-operate with the engineering and enforcement agencies in the city.
