The sheriff tips his head back and the whiskey slides down his throat. Well, let's go see the Cabinet before we call it a night.

As we thump down the board walk, we pass Dan Thorne's place. It's a wreck! But the boys are lined up three and four deep in front of the bar. We get a glimpse of Dan sitting on the end of the bar and catch a line of a lusty ballad he's singing.

As we enter the Cabinet, Ed Roberts, who is tending bar, greets us heartily and we order drinks from him.

Mike Hickey, usually the most genial of Irishmen, comes in and we have a drink on him. He's the co-partner of Burke, and they have the Burke-Hickey Hotel on the corner of Gurley and Montezuma on the end of Whiskey Row. Tonight Mike seems a trifle on the mor-ose side. He waves his glass before he downs it. "Boys, I'm lettin' you know; Tom Hallahan's a'gunnin' for me. This may be my last drink!"

We're standing in back of Mike, he's between us and the door. We step out from behind Mike as the swinging doors of the saloon crash against the wall. In strides Tom Hallahan!

Mike, crouching slightly, the fingers of his right hand resting lightly on the edge of the bar, speaks, "Here I am, Tom and ready!"

Hallahan pushes his hat back slowly with his right hand, and starts stepping sideways, edging around with each step. Mike turns as slowly, facing Hallahan. His fingers slide off the bar, but the hand doesn't drop. Mike is waiting.

Hallahan begins biting off words, "I told you if you messed around that gal of mine I was going to shoot you!"

Mike answers evenly, "Well, Tom, I'm still a-waitin'."

Hallahan explodes-temper and gun! His first shot misses, and goes into the back-bar mirror. Before he can shoot again, Mike has shot and missed.

Tom Hallahan pauses. Mike has his pistol between his knees, working the action like mad. He slaps the cylinder! It's jammed!

The white heat of anger leaves Tom. "Aw, let's call it off, Mike. She ain't worth it!"

"Not if I get this gun workin'," pants the slow-to-anger Mike.

Hallahan raises his 44! He turns five shots loose into the ceiling. "Now! Forget it, Mike."

Ed Roberts, taking advantage of the lull, breaks in soothingly "Belly up, boys, it's on the house."

C. and (SC-4 road oil road mix) of approximately 2% miles of the Phoenix-Prescott highway, beginning three miles south of the Wickenburg bridge and extending south, F. A. 59, 3rd Reo. Sch. No. 2. Joe de Arozena, resident engineer. Tiffany Construction Co., has contract 97% complete for grading, draining, A. B. C. and A. S. T. of approximately 4% miles of the Ajo-Gila Bend highway, beginning about five miles north of Ajo and extending northerly, F. A. S. 120-B. (1). H. Pinney, resident engineer. Warren Southwest, Inc., has contract 33% complete for the grading, draining, aggregate base course and asphaltic surface treatment of 9.25 miles of the Hope Parker highway, beginning at the town of Parker and extending southeasterly, F. Fisher Contracting Co., has contract 1% complete for grading and draining the roadway, importing binder material, mix ing binder and local material and oil processing the mixed material with MC-4 cutback asphalt on approximately 3 miles of the San Luis-Yuma highway, beginning at the town of San Luis and extending northerly. F. N. Grant, District Engineer Oswald Brothers have contract 93% complete for subgrading roadway and refinishing slopes, and replacing aggre gate base course and 90-95 road oil, plant mix, and one-half miles of asphalt surface treatment, beginning at Cameron and extending northerly about 25.6 miles on the Flagstaff-Fredonia highway, F. A. 95-B and F. L. 4-C. J. B. Johnson, resident engineer. Heuser and Garnet have contract 95% complete for grading, draining, aggre gate base course and asphaltic surface treatment, beginning at Holbrook and extending southerly about 11.75 miles on the Showlow-Holbrook highway, F. A. 131-A. H. B. Wright, resident engineer.

DISTRICT NO. 3

R. C. Perkins, District Engineer Geo. W. Orr and J. G. North have contract 91% complete for subgrading roadway and refinishing slopes, placing aggregate base course and asphaltic surface treatment on approximately 15.5 miles of the Globe-Springerville highway, F. A. 99-H. I. J. 1st Reo., which begins about 50 miles northeast of Globe and extends northeasterly. C. R. Browning, resident engineer.

Lec Moor Contracting Company has contract 92% complete for grading, draining, aggregate base course and cutback road mix of approximately 1.6 miles of the Superior-Miami highway, F. A. 16,2nd Reo., beginning about 3.5 miles northeast of Superior and extending northeasterly. R. D. Canfield, resident engineer.

Arizona Sand and Rock Co., has contract 32% complete for the widening of the existing pavement with Portland cement concrete and placing oil mix intersections on approximately 3.5 miles of the Mesa-Casa Grande Ruins highway, beginning at the south citvy limits of

Martin Contruction Co., has contract 99% complete for the grading, draining, aggregate base course and oil processing (S. C. 2, road oil, road mix) of 5.5 miles of the Douglas-Safford highway, beginning about 26 miles north of Douglas and extending northerly, F. A. 114-E. F. A. Berg, resident engineer.

Packard Contracting Company has contract 72% complete for the grading, draining, aggregate base course and oil process (S. C. 2, road oil road mix) of 6.1 miles of the Benson-Steins Pass high-way, beginning at the Arizona-New Mexico state line and extending westerly, F. A. 130-B. Geo. Lang, resident engi-neer. Tanner Construction Company has con-tract 68% complete for the grading, draining, aggregate base course and oil processing (S. C. 2, road oil road mix), of 3.6 miles miles of the Ajo-Tucson highway, beginning at the Papago Indian Reserva-tion boundary and extending easterly, F. A. 110-E. J. M. Hobbs, resident engineer.

BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS PROJECTS IN ARIZONA PROJECTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Route 3. Flagstaff-Clints Well, Coconino National Forest H. J. Hagen, Globe, Arizona, has the contract for grading and placing heavy crushed base course on Section F of Arizona Forest Highway Route 3, Flag-staff-Clints Well. Project begins at the south end of Mormon Lake and extends 2.594 miles northerly. Project is about 10% complete. F. A. Bonnell, Resident Engineer.

Route 7. Oak Creek National Forest Highway Lewis Brothers, Contractors, Phoenix, Arizona, have the contract for construction of a steel arch bridge over Wilson Canyon, about 27 miles southwest of Flagstaff, Arizona, on the Oak Creek Highway. The bridge will consist of a main span of 240 feet and approach spans totaling 100 feet. Work was started March 24, 1938, and is about 86% complete. A. W. Schimberg, Resident Engineer.

Route 33. Catalina Mountain Highway, Coronado National Forest Project consists of grading and draining of a highway on the south side of the Catalina Mountains, between a point approximately 17 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona, and Soldier Camp Ranger Station near the summit. The project has been completed to Vail's Corral, a future recreational area, and a distance of 8 miles towards the summit. H. H. Woodman, Resident Engineer.

PROJECTS COMPLETED Federal Lands Highway Project 5

Tanner Construction Company, Phoenix, Arizona, on July 30, 1938, completed a contract for grading, draining and placing of a bituminous surface treatment on a 5-mile portion of the Tucson-Ajo Highway, within the Papago Indian Reservation. F. A. Bonnell, Resident Engineer.

Route 28. Fredonia-Houserock Valley, Kaibab National Forest Highway The Arizona Sand and Rock Company, Phoenix, Arizona, on July 26, 1938, completed a contract for placing a bituminous surface treatment on 13 miles of the Fredonia-Houserock Valley Highway beginning at Jacob Lake, within the Kaibab National Forest and extending south to the forest boundary. Casson, Phoenix, Arizona, on August 1, 1938, completed a contract for placing a bituminous treated resurfacing course on 15 miles of highways ys on the south rim of the Grand Canyon National Park and adjacent to the Grand Canyon Village. NATIONAL PARK AND MONUMENT PROJECTS

Skousen Brothers, Albuquerque, New Mexico, on August 13, 1938, completed a contract for grading and placing of a light application of oil on 32 miles of the North Approach Road to Grand Canyon National Park. Project extends from Jacob Lake, Arizona, south to the Grand Canyon National Park boundary. C. R. Brashears, Resident Engineer.Fisher Contracting Company, Phoe-nix, Arizona, on August 20, 1938, com-pleted a contract for placing a bitumin-ous treatment on 5 miles of highway along the Rim of the Painted Desert within Petrified Forest National Monu-ment. BIDS OPENED

Bids were opened on July 28, 1938, for grading and placing base course surfac-ing with bituminous treatment on Sec-tions C and D of Arizona Forest Highway Route 28, Fredonia-House Rock Valley. Length of project 6.137 miles.

Bids were opened on July 28, 1938, for grading and placing base course surfacing with bituminous treatment on Sections C and portion of Section F on National Park Project Jacob Lake-North Rim Approach to Grand Canyon National Park. Length of project 1.278 miles.

Bids were opened on August 2, 1938, for grading a portion of Section B of Arizona Forest Highway Route 19, Clifton-Alpine. Length of project 6.115 miles.

Bids were opened on September 8, 1938, for grading, draining, and placing borrow backfill on a portion of Section B of Arizona Forest Highway Route 17, Snowflake-Pinetop. Length of project 3.175 miles.
