While denizens of the Chiricahua Mountains, the Indian name of which emerges in our local Anglo-Saxon as "Cherry Cows," are middle-of-the-roaders on this question of progress. We approve of the guest ranches in our midst, and take secret enlightenment from their comfort and luxury; but while our local pride expands under their guests' appreciation of our scenery, climate and history, we cling placidly to certain of our ancient folk-ways.

Life here on the eastern slope of the Chiricahuas is a pleasant pattern of the Old West and the New. Our corner of Arizona, the lower right hand one on your map, is just enough off the highway so that we haven't been hustled into the modern tempo. Somehow we have kept the feeling of pioneer living. Perhaps the impression is due to the distance that lends an arduous note to our daily life sixty miles to Douglas for a length of pipe or a paper patternperhaps to the presence still among us ofmen and women who knew the old frontier. This rugged sweeping country has always been a challenge to pioneers. Behind our little settlement at the mouth of Cave Creek, two thousand foot cliffs of red porphyry stand in a magnificent gateway to the pine covered mountains behind. The portal, which gives the name to our little post office of Portal, overlooks the long sweep of the San Simon Valley, and directly faces Granite Gap thirty miles away on the other side of the valley.
