Despite shortages of men and materials caused by war, careful maintenance of Arizona's highways assures the traveler today safe, fast traveling.
The road U. S. Highway 60 is broad and fast and well built, one of the great transcontinental highways crossing the state. Forty-five miles north of Globe, on the way to the White Mountains, Sixty crosses the Salt. Here the engineer had to use all the skills of his trade to bring the road down a mountainside into the gorge and up a moun.. tainside to the high plateau beyond. Here the modern traveler finds modern roadbuilding at its best. Here he finds 20th Century motoring at its most pleasant and most spectacular.
