THE LIVING HERITAGE OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

Frank Lloyd Wright's great architectural heritage to mankind is universally acclaimed. That he made another important contribution not only to America but to the world-the architects he created and the power he gave them to continue to build on the principle of organic architecture. He called it "organic" because it is archi motore that belongs to the maxim, to the them, to the purpose for which it is intended.
His primary inspiration was beauty. Any violation of form to him was perversion, degeneration of form. From his point of view, form could not be beautiful unless the interior world of man was beautiful. This was my own belief, and so together about thirty years ago we founded a school we called the Taliesin Fellowship where we call pride men and women capable of beauty and capable of creative thinking, we will so give them technical knowledge.
We tell the young people, "Here at Taliesin West in Arizona and at Taliesin North in Wisconsin you live and work in an indigenous atmosphere and surroundings conducive to growth. We will give you every possibility to express yourselves in terms of beauty to think, to feel, to be strong physically."
Today the students and the clients that admire Mr. Wright's architecture come to us because here they can get to his principle, not to his mode, not his form, not his exterior-but the principle that motivated great architects. At Taliesin we do not want our students to imitate; we want them to work according to principle with understanding and knowledge of what it is they are doing.
"Every idea," Mr. Wright said, "that is a must kiss, has a form, is capable of many forms. And according to the variety of forms of which it is capable is the value of the idea. So by way of ideas, and your mastery of them in relation to what you are doing, will come your value as an architect to your society and future. That's where you go to school. You can't get it in a university, you can't get it here, you can't get it any where, except as you love it. Love the feeling of it, taste it, and pursue it. What makes a good dog-eatdog a master of dog-eat-dog? He's usually a master of the ideas. He's usually a man of ideas.
"The difference betwons the consuon mat and the mouth is that the latone era sen, love, and respect the iden. In other words, the can of vidc. He's your mun man, and your common man la the one whe time it for grvored and haon's the dkpost tion nor the mentality to paseorace the kina."
The grous idea that Frank Lloyd Wright projected into the wodd is now being expressed at both the Tallesins by his highly trained men who have absorbed from him the very essence of thυς: Αλενι. Πισκισοάνος full-ledged architects with Scanses to practica architecture throughout the United States, they conthase to devote their lives to the principis of Organic Architecture and in torn sre mpplying it in new forms with new zantemala in the changing condition and toмеро of our civilisation. Powered of creative spirit, they kistood with him to move shead of tim.

Mr. Wright left a number of large commissions in the construction or desiga stage and these projects have been or are being carried through to completion by the Taliesin Associated Architects. Among these the largest is the Marin County Government Center in San Rafael, California. Mr. Wright had completed the design and structural drawings for the scheme by 1958 and construction on the first stage of the development began in the late summer of 1959. This building (shown in the construction photograph above) will provide the administrative offices of the County and is to be covered with a golden shell roof and dome. Glass curtain walls are shaded and sheltered by outside galleries and arched screen walls. Planned on a beautiful hilly 350 acre site the Center will eventually include a large auditorium, post office, county fair grounds, highway offices, jails, recreation areas and provide for mumerous other functions.
The most recently completed building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright is the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church for the Milwaukee Hellenic Community dedicated on July 2nd, 1961. Built of reinforced concrete in the form of the Greek cross the edifice is surmounted by an overhanging blue ceramic tile dome. Other buildings by Mr. Wright and now finished include the Guggenheim Museum in in New York, the Beth Sholom Synagogue in Philadelphia and the Dallas Theater Center as well as medical clinics in. Whitefish, Montana, and in Hastings, Minnesota, and numerous residences throughout the country. The Pilgrim Congregational Church in Redding, California, is currently in construction. Working drawings for an educational center at the University of Wichita, Kansas, designed by Mr. Wright in 1958, are now being completed by the Taliesin Associated Architects.
