Just six years ago when we last examined this big subject of Mohave County there was no Lake Havasu City to talk about. We did mention its location as a spot called “Site Six” from wartime U.S. Army Air Corps days when an air strip was constructed here on the blue waters of Lake Havasu, about twenty-five miles downlake from the crossing of U.S. 66 at Topock. While we commented that California industrialist Robert P. McCulloch had established a facility here to test his Scott line of outboard motors, we had no inkling that a full-fledged city would rise from the empty desert only a few years thereafter.

People by the tens of thousands from all parts of the United States have gained their first impressions of Arizona from visits to Lake Havasu City during the past four years. A private airline of six fourengined transports was created so that potential residents could be flown from their home cities to this unique community to see for themselves what was happening out there by the calm waters of Lake Havasu. Many hundreds of them returned to start a new form of life in this new city, and we welcome them as new Arizonans. These airborne visitors talk about three factors that impressed them most planning, water, and beauty. There is evidence at every hand of the detailed work done by master planner C. V. Wood, Jr. to create a city of efficiency and beauty for its eventual population of 60.000.

The great beauty of this place is shown by imaginative new architecture and meticulous landscaping, all with a majestic backdrop of blue lake and purple mountains. The water is seen everywhere as it is used in a creative manner to make the desert bloom, much as we saw it happen nearly forty years ago in the case of another planned desert city, Boulder City, Nevada. The fountains, lagoons, and famous waterfall at the hotel's doorway are constant reminders of the huge body of water waiting a few minutes away in the lake itself, A field of more than 150 starters will compete for $30,000 prize money in the Lake Havasu City Outboard World Championships November 30 and December 1.

The entire lakefront has been set aside for all time for use by the general public as Lake Havasu State Park. Thus, the shores are available at close hand to those residing in the city, but are not denied to the visitors, who will number more than 300,000 in 1968. They come to swim, fish, water ski, go boating, or just serve as spectators to the three national championship races held here each year for catamaran sailing boats, water skiers, and outboard motor racers. There is industry here, too, to serve as the solid base for growth of a well-rounded city that has a normal distribution of age groups. It all sounds as though this must be the best of three worlds jobs, homes, and recreation all found in what they call "The Wonderful Small World of Lake Havasu City." We're more than a little surprised, but awfully proud, to find that small world in our own big home area of Mohave County, Arizona, U.S.A.
