In sublimity the superlative degree of beauty no land can equal Arizona at this time of the year. The desert, the mountains, the sky, inspire sermons that are echoed through valleys, mesas, plateaus, gorges and canyons, where they are heard by the artists, photographers, poets and commentarians who have submitted their testaments for your soul's ruminations.

Meanwhile, back in the editor's office: people, and the wonderful things they have done and are doing, have inspired this Christmas editorial, dedicated with God's blessing to "V.C.M." The prime motivation came from the quantity and quality of letters and monies in response to our appeal for a "Cry House" and a Community Center for our Cocopah Indians. From around the world, from people in all walks of life, from places representing all races, creeds and colors of skin came the assurance that Faith, Hope, and Love are attributes of the human race, in a people-to-people testament of love.

I've noted in my three score years the increased emphasis on the commercial aspects of the season, and at the same time, the great resurgent awareness of the spiritual and moral significance of Jesus and his teachings, among those of the new generation. If you think our children are odd and at times appear manifested with strange ideas, try to remember that the strangest idea Jesus had was a fanatical belief that "Love is Salvation" He preached Love. He lived Love, and He died for Love of Mankind.

Christmas is in celebration of the most important happening ever to befall mankind, because the history of the world divided at the birth of Christ. In all the time covered in the books of the Old Testament, and in all the volumes of philosophical writings ever compiled before His time. Love was never conceived to be stronger than hate. Before Jesus there was no such thought as love for one's enemies. Until the Sermon on the Mount, the world had never known such a testament of universal brotherhood, through love for one another.

In a universal sense it matters little... Whether you believe or doubt that He was born of the Virgin Mary. Whether you believe or doubt that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not love, I am nothing. I COR. XIII, 2.

Whether you believe or doubt that He arose from the dead on Easter Sunday. Whatever is your faith... whatsoever you believe... The gospel truth is: Of all His teachings, this was His greatest and newest revelation: "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another." JOHN XIII, 34-35 According to Saint Paul:... the spectrum of Love is in every living human being. Patience... Kindness... Generosity... Humility... Courtesy... Unselfishness... Good Temper... Lack of Suspicion... Sincerity.

Nine basic human qualities, generally inherent in most people at birth. But don't feel frustrated if you cannot change the world overnight. After all, in the span of this planet's lifetime, two thousand years is a mighty short time. Jesus' concept of Peace, founded on purity of heart and on human brotherhood, is still such a new, challenging and elevated idea that only a few minds are capable of understanding it to the point of planning a foundation for the universal salvation of man and his world.

In parting I want to share with you the final few lines from Haniel Long's "The Power Within Us," a little book of singular beauty and an overpowering spiritual strength. If one lives where all suffer and starve, one acts on one's own impulse to help. But where plenty abounds, we surrender our generosity, believing that our country replaces us each and several. This is not so, and indeed a delusion. On the contrary the power of maintaining life in others, lives within each of us, and from each of us does it recede when unused. It is a concentrated power. If you are not acquainted with it, your Majesty can have no inkling of what it is like, what it portends, or the ways in which it slips from one. In the name of God, your Majesty, Farewell. - NUNEZ CABEZA DE VACA TO THE KING OF SPAIN - 1538 And if you are not acquainted with it, gentle reader, you've never experienced God's greatest gift to man. In one word.. LOVE. JOS. STACEY
