MAY, 1926 ARIZONA HIGHWAYS 15 Condition of Roads On Arizona State Highway System

[Editor's Note-These road conditions present the most accurate data obtainable up to the time of going to press. Rains may cause some changes.]

PHOENIX-PRESCOTT-ASH FORK (New Route)

From Phoenix to four miles beyond Marinette. A paved highway extends 20.15 miles, end of pavement through Nada and Beardsley to Hot Springs Junction to Wickenburg excellent. Wickenburg to Congress excellent.

Note: Construction of drainage structures on Nada-Hot Springs Section, necessitating short detours. Care should be exercised in driving same.

Congress to Yarnell, Federal Aid Project 72-B, completed and open to traffic. Condition very good. During recent heavy rains travel was slightly held up due to small slides. Yarnell to White Spar over 72-A excellent except for short detours due to construction of bridge in Peeples Valley.

Prescott-White Spar Forest highway excellent. Note: Slides occur during and following heavy rains on this section. The Bureau of Public Roads have a maintenance force on this section and are keeping the road open and safe for traffic. New route 112.888 miles. Driving time three and one-half hours.

Saving in mileage over Route via Kirkland 26.54 miles.

YUMA-PHOENIX HIGHWAY

Yuma-Phoenix Highway, Phoenix to Hassayampa, road paved. Excellent. Damage to shoulders from recent rains repaired.

Hassayampa River to Gillespie-gravel surfaced in excellent condition. Crossing on apron of Gillespie Dam except during high water. Note: Except during actual danger stage the Arizona Highway Department has available at all times a large truck for towing and transporting cars across the dam.

Gillespie Dam to Gila Bend-For a short distance immediately south of Gillespie Dam condition good. Remaining distance to Gila Bend excellent.

Gila Bend to Wellton-excellent. Wellton to Liguerta-good. Liguerta to Yuma fair. Length of route, Phoenix to Yuma 204.56 miles. Driving time seven hours.

DOUGLAS PEARCE

Improved Section, condition very good. Length 30 miles. Driving time one hour. Construction now going on on Section 3, remainder fair.

SOLOMONVILLE-CLIFTON

Solomonville 12 miles toward Clifton, condition good, 7.87 miles being reconstructed. Remaining distance to Clif ton Mountain Road excellent. Clifton to Duncan, and State Line excellent. This section now on new maintenance Project. Driving time one and onehalf hours.

CHANDLER-CASA GRANDE

Chandler-Casa Grande highway from Chandler south 6 miles paved. From San Tan Junction to Gila River use detour through pass. Fair condition. The 6 miles south of Chandler to the Junction of the San Tan Road surfacing is completed and in excellent shape. From New Bridge across the San Tan Canal is now open. Gila River to Casa Grande fair.

Note: Crossing of Gila River during high water impossible. Sacaton Dam Bridge is now open to all traffic.

ROOSEVELT-GLOBE-APACHE TRAIL

Roosevelt-Globe-Apache Trail from Apache Trail Junction on Mesa-Superior Highway to mile post, 9 miles west of Roosevelt. Excellent from mile post 9 to Roosevelt. Old road narrow with bad curves. New road to replace this section now under construction. Roosevelt to Globe very good. Driving time Phoenix to Globe via Roosevelt six hours.

Note: As a measure of safety to the traveling public the following precaution has been taken closing the road from Roosevelt dam to a point 5 miles towards Phoenix. Road opens during the following hours: Open 9:30 a. m. to 11 a. m.; open 11:30 a. m. to 1 p. m.; open 2:30 p. m. to 3 p. m.; open 4:30 p. m. to 7:30 a. m. Caution look out for construction trucks.

PHOENIX-TUCSON-NOGALES

Phoenix to Desert Wells paved. Desert Wells to Florence-Superior Junction gravel surfaced highway with a section of five miles asphaltic concrete pavement-excellent condition.

From Florence-Superior Junction to Florence very good. Additional work practically completed by extra maintenance crew. Heavy washouts occurred on this section during the rainy season. Florence streets fair to good. Florence to Oracle Junction excellent. Oracle Junction to Tucson excellent.

CAUTION-Care should be exercised in driving dips and fords.

Tucson towards Continental 11.85 miles paved; excellent. From end of pavement to pavement north of Nogales very good. Nogales city streets good. Distance Phoenix to Nogales 205.8 miles. Driving time seven hours.

HILLSIDE-KINGMAN

This road forms connecting link between County Highways, distance Hillside to Kingman over this route 123 miles. Total Phoenix to Kingman 215 miles. County roads rough,

PRESCOTT-JEROME

Prescott-Jerome Highway. This popular drive in excellent condition.

NOGALES-TOMBSTONE

Nogales to Patagonia, condition very good. Driving time one hour. Patagonia to Tombstone through Sonoita and Fairbanks, excellent. Total driving time Nogales to Tombstone two and one-half hours.

ASH FORK TO TOPOCK

Ash Fork to Kingman, distance 116 miles. Conditions excellent. Kingman to Topock (California State Line) Distance 54 miles. Condition excellent, 10 miles slow on account of mountain road, with steep grades and sharp curves. Driving time four and one-half hours.
