In the first years after the U.S. Forest Service was established in 1905, fire guards patrolled the forests on horseback. The earliest form of a lookout structure was a simple platform mounted in a tree. Eventually, permanent lookout stations and towers were established on prominent points. This tower, located somewhere in Arizona, was constructed in 1936 and added to the National Historic Lookout Register on August 5, 2003.
