The Arizona highway system undergoes constant rehabilitation, renovation and repair. New highways are being built: old highways are being modernized. Under wise and long range planning, Arizona of tomorrow will be assured fine highways to serve adequately every demand of increasing traffic.

DISTRICT NO. 1

Joe DeArozena, District Engineer Tanner Construction Company, Phoenix, Arizona has a contract for grading and draining the roadway over a new located line. Placing an aggregate base course and oil processing the roadway using an SC-6 road oil, plant mix. The construction of one 7 span, 6 girder bridge on a 45 degree skew; one 4-25 ft. span bridge on a 30 degree skew; one 3 span, 10'x8'x56.5' concrete box culvert; one 3span 10'x4'x53.5 concrete box culvert; one 10'x8'x110.5' concrete box culvert; one 6'x5'x104' concrete box culvert and other miscellaneous work on approximately 3.1 miles of the Kingman-Needles Highway. Phoenix-Tempe Stone Company, Phoenix, Arizona has a contract for the construction of a bridge across the Santa Maria river about 11 miles northwest of the town of Hillside. The substructure will consist of 4 intermediate piers and 2 abutment piers built on steel H piles driven approximately 30' below stream-bed. The superstructure will consist of a steel plate girder deck approximately 392' long with a 22' clear roadway. Construction started April 17th, 1939 and is to be completed by November 15th, 1939. The construction of one 10'x-8'x55.5' concrete box culvert; one 6'x6'x-45.75' concrete box culvert; one 6'x4'x47' concrete box culvert; one 5'x5'x37.5' concrete box culvert and other miscellaneous work on approximately 9.96 miles of the Flagstaff-Fredonia Highway, beginning near the town of Fredonia and extending southeasterly. Warren Southwest, Inc., Los Angeles, California, has a contract for grading and draining the roadway, placing an imported borrow base course and mixed bituminous surface, using an SC-4 Road Oil, Road Mix. The construction of about 12 oil Surfaced Fords with wood walls and other miscellaneous work incidental to the construction of approximately 5.36 miles of Ajo-Tucson highway. Beginning about seven miles southeast of Ajo and extending southeasterly. Construction started June 12th, 1939 and is to be completed by October 30, 1939. Federal Aid Secondary Project 110-H (1). A. Arizona Sand and Rock Company, Phoenix, Arizona has a contract for grading and draining the roadway, placing an aggregate base course and a Portland cement concrete pavement 22 ft. wide. One 11 ft. shoulder on each side of the pavement to be a salvaged bituminous mix, making a 44-ft. clear roadway. The widening of existing structures and other work incidental to the construction of 1.6 miles of the Ashfork-Flagstaff Highway, beginning about 8.5 miles west of Flagstaff and extending easterly. Pearson and Dickerson Contractors, Inc., have a contract for surfacing the roadway, which consists of furnishing and placing mixed bituminous surface, using SC-6 road oil, plant mix and other miscellaneous work on approximately 5.5 miles of the Prescott-Jerome Highway. R. C. Perkins, District Engineer N. G. Hill and Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has a contract for the grading and draining the roadway over a new located line. Placing imported borrow and select material over the roadway. Constructing about ten 6'x7'x29.5' concrete box culverts and other miscellaneous work incidental to the construction of approximately 9.8 miles of the Showlow-Holbrook Highway, beginning near Showlow and extending northerly. W. E. Bondurant, Roswell, New Mexico has a contract for the construction of a bridge across the Little Colorado river. about 2.5 miles east of Winslow. The substructure will consist of 8 intermediate piers and 2 abutment piers built on concrete piles driven approximately 55 ft. below streambed. The superstructure will consist of a steel plate girder deck with a 26' clear roadway and approximately 766' long, and will replace the present steel truss bridge which is 14 clear roadway and 620' long. Packard Contracting Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has a contract for grading and draining the roadway over a relocated line, placing an aggregate base course and mixed bituminous surface, using an SC-6 road oil, road mix. The construction of one 2 span 10'x8'x29.5 concrete box culvert, the widening of 2 existing bridges to a 28' clear roadway, the widening of 3 smaller size concrete box culverts and other miscellaneous work incidental to the construction of approximately 5.74 miles of the Springerville-New Mexico State Line Highway. Beginning about 9 miles east of Springerville and extending easterly to the New Mexico State Line. Construction started April 26th, 1939, and is to be completed October 31st, 1939. Lee Moor Contracting Company, El Paso, Texas, has a contract for the South Central avenue underpass in Phoenix. The underpass, which is the largest and most expensive grade separation project yet undertaken will be constructed entirely with Federal Aid Grade Crossing of funds. The city of Phoenix will furnish all rights of ways and reconstruct all buildings as necessary by reason of street widening. The project starts at the south line of Buchanan street and extends to the north line of Gold Alley south of Madison street, a distance of 945 feet. The street widening south of the Southern Pacific tracts requires 10 feet additional on the west and 5 feet on the east side. On the north end the widening requires 10 feet on each side in the half block between Jackson street and Gold Alley. All building fronts are to be set back to provide this additional width of street.

The underpass consists of a 4-lane divided roadway structure passing under both the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe tracks and providing street level crossing of Jackson street. Two 11-foot lanes are to be provided each side of the center division street level roadways on each side of the ramps between Buchanan street and the Southern Pacific tracks on the south and between Jackson street and Gold Alley on the north. Central avenue between Jackson street and the Southern Pacific tracks will be entirely covered except for a light well and stairway at the Southern Pacific tracks. The ramp on the south begins at the north line of Buchanan street and dips down to pass under the Southern Pacific tracks with a reinforced concrete barrel 208 feet long, at the end of which is a 43-foot light and stair well. The low level grade is to be continued from this point through another 126-foot barrel to the north side of Jackson street. The north ramp ends at street level on the south line of Gold Alley. Tiffany Construction Co., Phoenix, Arizona has a contract for subgrading the roadway and refinishing the slopes, furnishing and placing select material, applying SC-3 road oil asphaltic surface, and such other work incidental to the construction of approximately 10.1 miles of the Holbrook-St. Johns Highway, Beginning about 25 miles southeast of Holbrook and extending southeasterly. W. E. Bondurant, Roswell, New Mexico has a contract for the construction of two timber bridges across Carrizo Wash about 8 miles north of the town of St. Johns, on the St. Johns-Sanders Highway. The substructures will consist of four rows of 30' treated timber piles driven 19' on centers. The decks will be constructed of 2"x6"x24" flooring on edge giving a 23-0" clear roadway. It includes the approach fills, surfaced with mixed bituminous, using SC-4 road oil, road mix. The subgrading and relaying of the aggregate base course and oil mix and dismantling of the old bridge. State Forces are improving U. S. 80, Benson-Douglas Highway through Bisbee. The work consists of widening and resurfacing 1500 feet of pavement. Two grade changes, curve betterment on dangerous curves, placing curb, gutter and sidewalks, rebuilding rubble retain ing walls, placing cattle guards and fencing and constructing a grilled drain across the highway to eliminate wet pavement. PROJECTS COMPLETED

Route 19, Clifton-Alpine Highway, Crook National Forest All Arizona Engineering and Construc tion Company, Clifton, Arizona, on June 29, 1939 completed a contract for grad ing, draining and placing cushion ma-terial on a portion of Section B of Arizona Forest Highway Route 19, CliftonAlpine. Project begins approximately 45 miles north of Clifton and extends northerly 6.115 miles. E. F. Koch, Resident Engineer.

Jacob Lake-North Rim Approach to Grand Canyon National Park Fisher Contracting Company, Phoenix, Arizona on June 29, 1989 completed a contract for grading, draining and placing base course surfacing with light bituminous treatment on a section of the Jacob Lake-North Rim Approach Road to Grand Canyon National Park. Project begins at Jacob Lake and extends south 1.278 miles. C. R. Brashears, Resident Engineer.

PROJECTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Route 28, Fredonia-Houserock Valley Highway, Kaibab National Forest Fisher Contracting Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has the contract for grading, draining and placing base course surfacing with light bituminous treatment on portions of Sections C and D of Arizona Forest Highway Route 28, Fredonia-Houserock Valley. Project is located between points approximately 3 and 16 miles north of Jacob Lake. The length of roadway between these points covered by the project is 6.137 miles. Work was resumed May 24, 1939 after a winter shutdown which began January 3, 1939 and is about 99% complete. C. R. Brashears, Resident Engineer.

Oswald Brothers, Contractors, Los Angeles, California, have the contract for grading, draining and placing crusher run rock top course with a light bituminous treatment on portions of Sections C and D of Arizona Forest Highway Route 28, Fredonia-Houserock Valley. Project begins at Jacob Lake and extends 11 miles northerly towards Fredonia. Work was started April 17, 1939 and is about 68% complete. C. R. Brashears, Resident Engineer.

Route 33, Catalina Mountain Highway, Coronado National Forest Project consists of grading and draining of a highway on the south side of the Catalina Mountains, between a point approximately 17 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona and Soldier Camp Ranger Station near the summit. The project has been completed from the foot of the mountain to a point 9.5 miles towards the summit. H. H. Woodman, Resident Engineer.

Bids will be received until 10:00 a. m. August 3, 1939 at the Phoenix Office, Public Roads Administration, for grading and draining Section G of Arizona Forest Highway Route 3, FlagstaffClints Well. Project is located on the east shore of Mormon Lake and is 2.074 miles long.

Bids will be received until 10:00 a. m. August 8, 1939 at the Phoenix Office, Public Roads Administration, for grading and draining Section F of Arizona Forest Highway Route 11, Payson-Colcord Mountain. Project begins 9½ miles east of Payson, Arizona and extends easterly 2.608 miles towards Indian Gardens.

Bids will be received until 10:00 a. m. August 10, 1939 at the Phoenix Office, Public Roads Administration, for grading and draining a portion of Section D of Arizona Forest Highway Route 19, Clifton-Alpine. Project begins 9 miles south of Alpine, Arizona and extends 1.652 miles toward Alpine.
