Lee Moor Contracting Company, El Paso, Texas, has a contract for grading, draining and paving 2.6 miles on the Williams Flagstaff Highway. The work begins about 9 miles east of Williams and extends east. The pavement will be Portland cement concrete 22' wide, with salvaged oil mix used for shoulders, 7' wide. Lewis Brothers, Phoenix, Arizona, have a contract for constructing a bridge and 1.2 miles of approaches at Canyon Diablo on U. S. 66, 24 miles west of Winslow. Bridge is to be steel plate girder, with concrete floor, length 224' clear roadway width 26'. Approaches will have bituminous road mixed surfacing 22' wide with 7' shoulders, of salvaged oil mix. George W. Orr, El Paso, Texas, has a contract for placing binder material, aggregate base course, and SC-6 plant mixed surfacing on 20.6 miles of the SolomonsvilleDuncan Highway, on U. S. 70. The work begins 2 miles east of Solomonsville and extends east. Construction started September 25, 1939 and is to be completed by March 31, 1940. This contract embraces Federal Lands Project 12 (1) (1938) A. F. E. 7030, and Federal Aid Projects 77-A (2) (1940), 77-B (2) (1940), 77-C (2) (1940), and 88-A (2) (1940), A. F. E. Lee Moor Contracting Company, El Paso, Texas, has a contract for the South Central avenue underpass in Phoenix. The underpass, which is the largest and most expensive grade separation project yet undertaken will be constructed entirely with Federal Aid Grade Crossing funds. The city of Phoenix will furnish all rights of ways and reconstruct all buildings as necessary by reason of street widening. The project starts at the south line of Buchanan street and extends to the north line of Gold Alley south of Madison street, a distance of 945 feet. The street widening south of the Southern Pacific tracts requires 10 feet additional on the west and 5 feet on the east side. On the north end the widening requires 10 feet on each side in the half block between Jackson street and Gold Alley. All building fronts are to be set back to provide this additional width of street.The underpass consists of a 4-lane divided roadway structure passing under both the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe tracks and providing street level crossing of Jackson street. Two 11-foot lanes are to be provided each side of the center division street level roadways on each side of the ramps between Buchanan street and the Southern Pacific tracks on the south and between Jackson street and Gold Alley on the north. Central avenue between Jackson street and the Southern Pacific tracks will be entirely covered except for a light well and stairway at the Southern Pacific tracks. The ramp on the south begins at the north line of Buchanan street and dips down to pass under the Southern Pacific tracks with a reinforced concrete barrel 208 feet long, at the end of which is a 43-foot light and stair well. The low level grade is to be continued from this point through another 126-foot barrel to the north side of Jackson street. The north ramp ends at street level on the south line of Gold Alley. Geo. W. Orr, El Paso, Texas has a contract for grading and draining the roadway, placing a select material and aggregate base course over a new-located line. The construction of one 3 span concrete slab bridge; one 2 span 10'x6'x66.6' concrete box culvert on a 45 degree skew; one 10'x6'x45' -6" concrete box culvert; one 10'x7'x57'-0" concrete box culvert; Four 6'x7' concrete box culverts; one 6'x3x29-6" concrete box culvert; one 6'x4'x45'-00' concrete box culvert and other miscellaneous work on approximately 5.7 miles of the Showlow-Holbrook Highway. Beginning about 10 miles north of Showlow and extending northwesterly.

Tanner Construction Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has a contract for grading and draining the Roadway over a new-located line. Placing an aggregate base course and plant mixed bituminous surface, using an (SC-6) road oil for the center 22' and a Bituminous Surface treatment on the two 7' shoulders. The construction of six 4 span 10'x4'x37.5' concrete box culverts; one 6 span 10'x5'x37.5' concrete box culvert; four 3 span 10'x4'x37.5' concrete box culverts; two 2 span 10'x4'x37.5' concrete box culverts; and other miscellaneous work incidental to the construction of approximately 7.5 miles of the Benson-Steins Pass highway. Tanner Construction Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has a contract for the construction of an underpass and 1.2 miles of road on the Benson-Stein's Pass Highway at Luzena. The underpass is a grade separation with the Southern Pacific Railroad, and will be 246' long with 34' clear roadway. The road on either side of underpass is to have SC-4 bituminous road mixed surfacing. Construction started September 18, 1939 and is to be completed by April 30th, 1940. J. A. Casson Company of Phoenix, Arizona, has a contract for grading and draining the roadway and placing a mixed bituminous surface, using an SC-4 road oil, road mix. The construction of ten 2 span 6'x8'x 37'.6" concrete box culverts; one 6 span 10'x6'x37x6" concrete box culvert; two 2 span 10'x4'x37'6" concrete box culverts; one 3 span 10'x3'x37'x6" concrete box culverts; one 3 span 10'x4'x37'6" concrete box culvert; one 4 span 10'x3'x37'6" concrete box culvert and other miscellaneous work on approximately 7.9 miles of the BensonStein's Pass Highway, beginning at the town of San Simon and extending westerly. Pearson and Dickerson Contractors, Inc., has a contract for grading and draining the roadway; furnishing and placing select material, aggregate base course, plant mixed bituminous surface (using SC-6 Road Oil), and emulsified asphalt seal coat; and salvaging, mixing and relaying the oil mix. This contract includes, also, the widening of two concrete deck bridges and one timber bridge to 28 ft. clear roadway; the widening of six smaller size concrete box culverts; and other miscellaneous work incidental to the reconstruction of approximately 8.2 miles of the Prescott-Phoenix Highway beginning about 16 miles southwest of Prescott near Wilhoit and extending southwesterly to ward Congress Junction. Phoenix-Tempe Stone Company has a contract for grading and draining the road way; furnishing and placing aggregate base course, plant mixed bituminous surface (using SC-6 road oil), and emulsified asphalt seal coat. The construction of two multiple box culverts, a reinforced concrete bridge (four continuous spans, 25 ft. each), and other miscellaneous work on approximately 8.8 miles of the Benson-Douglas Highway beginning about five miles south of Tomb stone and extending southerly toward Doug las. Tiffany Construction Company has a contract for subgrading the roadway and re finishing the slopes, furnishing and placing select material, a SC-6 road oil, plant mix, a type "B" Seal Coat and Bituminous treat ing the shoulders on approximately 16.4 miles of the Globe-Showlow Highway be ginning about 3 miles northeast of Globe and extending northeasterly toward Show low, and is to be completed by July 31, 1940. Casson Company has a contract for the grading and draining the roadway, furnishing and placing imported Borrow, imported Borrow base course and a plant mixed bituminous surface, using SC-6 road oil, and bituminous treating the shoulders with SC-2 road oil. The construction of 5 multiple 10 ft. span concrete box culverts; one 4 25' continuous span, reinforced con crete slab bridge and 12 miscellaneous smaller size concrete box culverts and other miscellaneous work incidental to the construc tion of 9.2 miles of the Benson-Stein's Pass Highway, beginning 6.2 miles northeast of Willcox and extending northeasterly to Bowie Junction, and is to be completed by September 15, 1940. PUBLIC ROADS ADMINISTRATION PROJECTS IN ARIZONA PROJECTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION-Route 33, Catalina Mountain Highway, Coronado National Forest

Project consists of grading and draining of a highway with prison labor on the south side of the Catalina Mountains, between a pointapproximately 17 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona, and Soldier Camp Ranger Station near the summit. The project has been completed from the foot of the mountain-tain to a point 9.6 miles towards the summit. H. H. Woodman, resident engineer.

PROJECTS SUSPENDED FOR WINTER Route 11, Payson-Colcord Mountain Highway, Tonto National Forest

H. J. Hagen, Globe, Arizona, has a contract for grading and draining Section F of Arizona Forest Highway Route 11, Payson-Colcord Mountain. Project begins 9½ miles east of Payson, Arizona and extends easterly 2.608 miles toward Indian Gardens. Work started August 30, 1939, and was 93% complete when work was suspended for the winter on January 6. F. H. Horton, resident engineer.

Route 28, Fredonia-Houserock Valley Highway, Kaibab National Forest

Oswald Brothers, Contractors, Los Angele, California, have the contract for grading, draining and placing crusher rock top course with a light bituminous surface treatment on portions of Sections C and D of Arizona Forest Highway Route 28, Fredonia-Houserock Valley. Project begins at Jacob Lake and extends 11 miles northerly towards Fredonia. Work was suspended for the winter on September 29, 1939, when about 91% completed. V. G. Watson, resident engineer.

Jacob Lake-North Rim Approach to Grand Canyon National Park

W. W. Clyde and Company, Springerville, Utah, has the contract for placing base course and bituminous treated surfacing on the Jacob Lake-North Rim Approach Road to Grand Canyon National Park; a portion of Grand Canyon Route 3, the Bright Angel Point-Cape Royal Highway; a portion of Grand Canyon Route 4, the Bright Angel Spring-North Entrance Highway; and the North Rim Headquarters Service Roads. Project is 34.489 miles in length. Work was suspended for the winter on November 27, 1939, when about 14% complete. V. G. Watson, resident engineer.

On U. S. Highway 66 West of Kingman

One of the important road projects on U. S. Highway 66 has been the completion of several miles of new highway west of Kingman. Highway 66 carried the heaviest load in the state during 1939 and several important projects have been completed to more adequately care for this heavy traffic.
