Spring

Spring is the gayest and friendliest word in the language. Of all the seasons Spring seems more intimate and delightful than any other. Throughout all the West-from Powder River in Wyoming to the San Pedro and the Gila in Arizona, from the ranges of Cochise County to Montana-Spring is an awakening, something akin to a miraculous happening.

If you live to be nine and ninety, or if you're only nine or deliciously nineteen, Spring comes upon you all of a sudden as a surprise, bringing round-eyed admiration and wonder. Spring doesn't come in like a tiresome neighbor, full of innocent smalltalk, droning out the tiresome tales. Spring comes gushing in, bubbling and sprightly, full of laughter and merriment, new and full of music, exciting and thrilling.

Now take Winter, for instance. Yes, Winter is a nice time of the year. We are especially fortunate with our Winter in Arizona, because we are not bumped and banged around by cold weather, and we don't have to go slipping and sliding on icy sidewalks to dump the ashes in the alley. Very nice, Winter, very nice, with hot-chocolate weather and such.

And Autumn! Delightful season! Soft and gentle and refreshing, Autumn is a beautiful season in our land. The heat of Summer has gone, and there's an exhilarating tang to the air and the evenings are cool and serene. Autumn brings pop corn weather, let's-go-to-the-show weather! Yes. Autumn has attractions that cannot be denied.

And then Summer! Ah! Now there's a season for you. You get that let's-gofishing or let's-go-swimming attitude and in between times the cool ground under a shady tree practically conquers you. Summer brings long, lazy, sleepy afternoons when you yawn.. and stretch. and have day dreams, and you build air castles and... life is very swell if nobody or nothing disturbs you or takes you away from your dreams or air castles Summer is full of watermelon weather and ice cream weather and if you could only be a little boy or a little girl again how grand it would be to take off your shoes and go barefooted.

Summer? Yes, Summer! You have to hand it to Summer.

But Spring! Spring is hard to beat. Even when you get into the desert in our land, where seasons change so slowly you barely notice the change, you know that Spring is here. The air is just a little bit lighter and the sun has a particular glow. The skies are just a little bit bluer and the clouds a mite whiter and more billowy than at any other time. And then the flowers just seem to have popped up all about you and they seem to dance in the breeze and shout laughingly, "Surprise!" "Surprise!"

Spring is golfing weather, let's-go-for-a-ride weather. Spring is go-work-in-the-garden weather, when you look-for-the-radishes weather. Spring is whistling-and-skipping weather. Spring is pretty grand.

Spring is the season when a guy who can't write poetry tries to express himself by writing a piece like this. But you know you can't write about Spring or read about Spring. Spring is something that sneaks into the blood stream, and you won't know what it is or where it came from but all of a sudden there it is. You can't describe it. It's an emotion to be felt. You know what we mean. It's Spring! Yippee! R. C.

Greetings from Arizona to the Emperor of Japan

Dear Mr. Hirohito: Today several things happened around our office that made us think of you, and so we thought it would be a nice time to sit down and write you a letter.

We've never had the pleasure of meeting you personally, although we've seen you in the news reels and your picture in the papers. You seem to be a sad, dumblooking little guy on a white horse, a nobody with pop eyes, but of late you've become a somebody because you've turned your boys loose to mess things up in the Pacific. Mr. Hirohito, just tell your boys to have their fun while they can, because trouble is coming. Yes, sir, Mr. Hirohito, trouble is coming.

The first thing that happened this morning to make us think of you, Mr. Hirohito, was the sound of planes. By looking out of the window we could see the planes in the bright Arizona sunshine, gleaming shafts of silver against a deep, blue sky, proud things of beauty and strength. Those planes were manned by young Americans learning to fly. All over the West, Mr. Hirohito (and we can say this without giving either comfort or information to the enemy), all over the West there is the sound of planes. America is learning to fly. And all over America there is the sound of men marching, there is the sound of assembly lines rolling out the instruments of war; all over America there is the sound of a nation being aroused to fighting fury. Trouble is coming for you and your boys, Mr. Hirohito, trouble is coming.

The second thing that made us think of you, Mr. Hirohito, was a letter that came in this afternoon's mail. In a way it is a remarkable document, and it de scribes better than anything else we know the most terrible fury of all for you and your boys, Mr. Hirohito-the America who in a few short months has turned from the things of peace to engage in the affairs of war. When you and your boys planned this war, Mr. Hirohito, you definitely overlooked this America-whether soldier, sailor, marine because he's trouble for you Mr. Hirohito, trouble in a great big way. We'll try to tell you about him, but first we'll read you this letter that came from one of these boys, so you'll get the drift of what it's all about.

The letter is from a young man who is a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. Where it is written from doesn't matter. He writes: "I would like to subscribe to your magazine starting with the January issue. Please send subscription rates and bill me, I am a true son of Arizona. Was born in Mesa in 1914 and lived there until October, 1940, at which time I enlisted in this Corps. There are two things that I have missed more than anything else, Home Sweet Home, and my monthly edition of Arizona Highways, so I insist on having the magazine with me wherever I may go. I might even get a chance to read a copy of it to the Japs in the public square of Tokyo.From all our state and nation-from little towns and big towns-young men deeply attached to their land and country are getting ready for the pleasant business of entertaining you and your boys in the blue Pacific and everyone would like to meet you personally in the public square in Tokyo. Trouble is coming, Mr. Hirohito, trouble is coming.

The Corporal in the Marines from Mesa, in his letter demonstrates the tenor of the American with whom you will have to deal. He'll get the magazine each month with the compliments of his fellow citizens of Arizona but he was quite willing to pay. That's an American trait-willing to pay his way. And then you see that he's homesick but there's the high resolve of forgetting home for awhile for the business in the public square in Tokyo.You can't beat these boys, Mr. Hirohito. You can herd a dirty horde of peasant Boys from Korea and Manchuria and your crowded little islands into headlong destruction. A soldier, ten thousand soldiers, a hundred thousand soldiers, they mean nothing to you. Just so many sheep to be herded heedlessly to destruction to further a military plan. But we do things differently. Every soldier in the armed forces of the United States of America is an American. No matter how low his rank may be, as an individual he's just as important and just as sacred to this country as his highest superior. The American people will not permit a single American life to be wasted thoughtlessly. That's the great difference between your boys and our boys, Mr. Hirohito, between your way of life and ours. He's trouble, Mr. Hirohito, this American-whether soldier, sailor or marine. His name may be Jones, or Smith, or Chenowith or Chavez; Gonzales, Anderson, or Holberg or Schultz; he may be a Roosevelt or Vanderbilt or just plain Brown. He may answer to Henry, or Jim, or Frank, or Tom, Dick or Harry, Bill or Mike, Isador, or Rubin, or Jacob, or Wilhelm, or Sven or just plain Butch. There'll be a McDougall, and a Finnegan, Murphy and Kelly, Bukovich, Rigoletti, Stowtovski, and even Chong, and Yamamoto. He's the aggregate of all the free people of the world, from all lands and nations and he even represents the primitive tribes of America before the white man came. One of our generals is an Osage Indian and he's in the air force. And part of our army-like the 25th infantry are colored boys and they can fight, too. Trouble, Mr. Hirohito, nothing but trouble.

You'll learn a lot more about these boys, Mr. Hirohito, when they come marching up Main Street in Tokyo some day, the Stars and Stripes heralding the victory for free people everywhere. And when they take the town over and see the sights on their first Saturday night, treat them nice or they might get mad and break up things. And when they go dancing at the Imperial Hotel be sure the band can play music they like-like "Elmer's Tune," or "Chattanooga Choochoo." They'll appreciate your thoughtfulness. Prelude to Spring

In the quite merry month of March the gentle surgings of Spring are felt through the West. In central and southern Arizona and in the pages of your humble journal, this fine month, Spring comes tripping along like the vivacious damsel she is.

To her, our charming companion, we dedicate our coverpiece, a striking study of the saguaro blossom, the handiwork of Marvin Deshler of the Photo Lab in Phoenix. The saguaro doesn't get down to the business of dressing up in spring blossoms until late Spring and early Summer, but we know you won't mind our putting this portrait of Spring on March's cover.

It is always a pleasure to view a saguaro blossom, our state flower incidentally, and a delicate masterpiece of desert majesty. Truly a corsage for the gods.

If you are interested in horses, and surely all people are who are interested in noble and beautiful things, you'll enjoy the fifth annual Arizona's Horsemen's Association show to be held at the State Fairgrounds in Phoenix April 16, 17, 18 and 19. Dorothy Challis Mott, not unfamiliar to these pages, gives us this month a preview of the show and we join her in promising you a display of some of the finest and most costly horses in the west. It is fitting that out here in the West where horses helped build an empire that a few days each year are set aside as a time to pay tribute to his kind. A former cowpuncher, Ross Santee, did the drawings for us. 'Nuff sed!

There is an underlying significance to our story of Tovrea's, the name that stands for an industrial empire of beef in our state, that should be noted. For lo! these many years Arizona and other western states have merely been considered the producers of raw material, with the processing and manufacturing of that raw material left to more enterprising people through the East and Middle West. It has been, and is, that way with cotton and copper. And it has always been that way with cattle. We raise 'em but other folks fatten 'em up and prepare 'em for market. Along came Ed Tovrea and said if we can raise 'em, we can also fatten 'em up, and prepare 'em for market. He had a vision and that vision became the Tovrea Packing Plant in Arizona today. There is romance and achievement behind Tovrea's in Arizona and we are proud to give you that story this month. Max Kegley clambered in and about the plant and several ranches of Tovrea's for weeks to get the story in pictures.

America is many things to many people. One of the things that America means to us is a great, broad land, full of distance and beauty and sunlit miles of bigness, and the big skies above those miles. Too often we take our own country for granted; yet no pastures are greener than ours. We try to express something of what we feel for America in a picture story: "O Beautiful for Spacious Skies" shown herein. Esther Henderson is responsible for the pictures, as nice a group of beautiful pictures as we've ever shown in these pages. Poetry in black and white, as it were.

Gus Thomas Smith, who has spent many, many days and many nights studying the desert, tells us in this issue of one of the desert's loveliest inhabitants the Night Blooming Cereus. We sometimes feel sorry for the hurrying travelers who haven't time to stop and get acquainted with our land. You will like that rare and fragile creature -Goddess of the Night.

Many newcomers to the West and many westerners who have not been fortunate enough to live on ranches and many other westerners whose only association with the cattle industry is in the form of a T-bone steak or a rodeo are perplexed about the reading of brands. It's simple if you know how. Oren Arnold and John Hale, whose book, "Hot Irons," is a classic, give us the simple ABC's of brand reading somewhere within these covers, and we think you'll have no trouble learning to read a brand as well as the next person. And we think you'll find it a lot of fun.

"El Real de Santa Rita," a saga of the old West, is this month's contribution of the Arizona Writers' Project. It deals with an old mining town in the Santa Ritas, near Tucson, and the whole presentation has a note of the authentic. These were the days, as the saying goes.
