In Maricopa County, the sun rises, sets and seems to reside there, in one part of the county or another for more than 330 days of the year. Any part of Maricopa County is considered the heart of the Valley of the Sun and from any level offers the diligent photographer more spectacular sunrises and sunsets per year than any other Arizona locale. This outstanding photograph was made in the Superstition Mountain area, shooting straight into the early morning light. Linhof IV camera, 500mm Tele Xenar lens. Ektachrome film exposed 1/25th sec., f48.
"SALT RIVER THROUGH APACHE TRAIL" - DOROTHY MCLAUGHLIN. The Apache Trail (Arizona 88) is a spectacular
highway through some of Arizona's finest mountain and desert country. It is a popular area for Maricopa County residents who use the lakes and river for year round recreational activities. The Salt River runs through the canyon, linking the chain of lakes and dams servicing the Valley of the Sun. This photograph was made on a sunny day in March. Hasselblad 500C camera, 80mm lens. Ektachrome EX, exposed 1/25th sec. at f9.
NEXT MONTH: THE SOUTHWEST OF OLAF WEIGHORST THE COMPLEAT ENVIRONMENT
People who have lived in Maricopa County for a year or more insist that within its environs is the most nearly perfect place to live which man has a right to find anywhere this side of heaven. And without the slightest tinge of chauvinism we unhesitatingly concur. The reasons and details are contained in our text.
Naturally the two dominant reasons are the area's climatic and geographical factors which give man a near ideal place to live, work and play. Today residents of Maricopa County enjoy the good life which was known and affordable only to those with wealth enough and leisure time enough to enjoy our mild winters and the pleasures of our scenic wonders. The compleatness of Maricopa County's environment will forever be a monument to man himself, because in the beginning there was only climate and a kind of country which not only cast a holding spell on the first settlers, but stirred them spiritually and bravely to hold the hope that this land was worth their blood and guts and toil. They built the canals, the dams to hold the lakes. They endured the hellish summers and the droughts. Were it not for man, the desert would still be a pitiless tyrant.
It is a remarkable land, made for man and his dreams. It responds to his toil and love and seems eager to yield its resources on a basis that leaves man and his family spirit enough, time enough and more than room enough to make the living worth while. It is a land which needs people, and it seems from the very beginning it has been blessed with the right kind of people. From the first pioneers and frontier busters to those who have come to work or to retire, bringing their hopes, talents, ideas and ideals, comes a rapport with the land, resulting in a general manifestation that this is the place. Not perfect perhaps but almost. .. R.C.
