FORMATIONS

The sky wore a necklace of birds this morning, nuggeted dark in hue - strand after strand gleamed and flashed gracing a throat of blue; swung like pendants from azure ears; sequined a shoulder's curve; spread out and danced in an undulant line to the tune of the pulse of a nerve; rode on a ridge of light like fringe on a golden shroud, clung like a brooch on a breast of white then laced in and out of a cloud

OWLS IN A WOOD

From branches interlaced, From shadows moon-etched, In a leafy tangle lost in opacity They watch unseen.

But the night knows the strength Of blunt, folded wings, The warmth of hunched bodies, A curving to bits of shade Of greater substance More dappled, downy, and barred And everywhere the luminous eyes Wide and stark Where the owls sit motionless, Staring, waiting, Listening to the dark. - Ethel Jacobson

Letter to An Editor

Mr. Stacey, I don't suppose you know me really, though my portrait has been taken on a few occasions by a wildlife photographer whom I think you have talked with.

I remember him particularly because he had his young son with him. They followed us, I and my ewes, many times and so we got to understand a little about the vagaries of man. Some men you can trust, and some not, and some try to keep us alive just so we can be exploited by those who just want our heads. We have lived for centuries upon our peaks and crags and yet our story is still to be told, for we are a part of the great heritage and dwindling legacy. We are barely able to survive from all the pressures and I think this is what our man-friend and his son had as their objective when they visited us so many times in the Kofas.

We haven't seen them, those two gentle spirits of the cameras, in some time and we fear that their creative efforts to portray our lives, our livelihood, our fears and our hopes for better insight may have been shuffled aside.
