A Rich Harvest
Unique in design, the Grieve residence (pictured above) was Prescott, Arizona's first solar-heated home. The 1,000-square-foot collector, located on the roof, provides the heat. Architect George Allan and Arizona Sunworks designed the system.
PHOTOGRAPHS BY HERBERT WADE Herbert Wade, solar engineer, and H. E. Crain Builders are nearing completion of this attractive solar-heated home in Flagstaff, Arizona. The rock-bin storage system (common river rocks soak up the sun's energy during the day and radiate it back at night) can be used to both heat in winter and cool in summer. In both the Prescott and Flagstaff homes, a normal system is still used as backup for extended periods of inclement weather, but the use of solar energy has reduced the need for conventional fuels by 70% and more.
