Electrolytic Refinery
LEFT: Finely crushed ore is conveyed into 16 huge ball mills at the grinding facilities in the Sierrita copper-molybdenum concentrator near Sahuarita, Arizona. Here it is mixed with water and is ground by steel balls to a powder consistency to liberate the minute particles of copper and molybdenum minerals in the ore from the waste minerals. Each mill is 16½ feet in diameter, 19 feet long and is driven by a 3000 H.P. electric motor. Approximately 250 tons of ore are ground by one mill every hour.-RAY MANLEY STUDIOS RIGHT: Posing in front of the massive open pit mine of the Duval Corporation is a young fashion model in an evening dress made entirely of 100% copper mesh by Cele Peterson of Cele Peterson's Specialty Shops for Women, Tucson.
BELOW: The converter aisle at Phelps Dodge. Fifty tons of "blister" copper, still containing a small amount of sulfur, is poured from a converter into a ladle. From here it goes to the oxidizing furnace for further purification. RAY MANLEY STUDIOS
