Arizona's High Country Winter Wonderland
The San Francisco Peaks, near Flagstaff, dominate the high plateau region of Northern Arizona. Tall, serene, remote and majestic they are a guiding landmark for travelers on U.S. 89, U.S. 66 and Interstate 40. To the Hopi Indians they are the sacred mountains where the revered kachinas return for the winter after the autumn harvest. From early autumn through late spring the peaks are generally covered with snow for the delight and pleasure of skiers and winter sports enthusiasts who head for the Arizona Snow Bowl on the snow-packed slopes. The sun's last soft warm glow before the season's first snowfall. LANCE SMITH MILLER
