EDITOR'S

RECENTLY Arizona Highways won the Magazine of the Year award from the Regional Publishers Association, a group composed of magazines from 24 states, Canada, and Ireland. The award recognizes both editorial and design excellence.

I bring this up for two reasons. First, the award is highly regarded and is a fitting tribute to former editor Merrill Windsor (who retired recently) and the staff he has built. And, secondly, it gives us an opportunity to point out the magazine has earned a great number of awards over the years from a variety of peer organizations. Our readers already know Arizona Highways is a quality magazine, but it's always nice to have your judgments confirmed by experts.

During the past several months, we have been planning intensively to bring you even greater magazines. Beginning this fall, we will put more emphasis on travel stories, and we will introduce a monthly hiking feature in October. In the coming months, we will publish stories on lost mines and treasures, gunfighters, and ghost towns. We'll take you to places of magnificent scenery that relatively few have seen, places the back roads don't even go. We'll follow the mules into the Grand Canyon and the bighorn sheep up a mountainside. We'll even show you a day in the life of a ladybug, an intriguing adventure.

Here's a sample of stories Arizona Highways will bring you this fall:

Remember, as you swelter through these hot August days, Christmas really isn't that far away.

So enjoy the rest of the summer. Bob Early
