THE CANYON IN WINTER

In winter's frosty embrace, Arizona's grandest canyon undergoes a dramatic transformation. Snow dusted and cloud shrouded, the ancient pyramids, temples, and thrones appear strangely mystical and otherworldly, as though created for some mighty Wagnerian spectacle. So vastly different is the wintertime scene when compared to the summer season that the visitor who admired the great chasm only when bees were buzzing and flowers blooming gets the impression he is gazing into a greater depth, an abyss earlier man may have believed exposed the very core of the Earth. Different, too, is winter's vast canyonscape, now composed of muted shades, lacking somewhat in the drama and intenseness of the red, earthy primary colors abundant in other seasons. Certainly, it is this cyclical mutation, in addition to numerous other attractions, that keep tourists and residents and our photographers - returning again and again to this enchanted spot.
