Focusing on the White Mountains and Coronado Trail

It was like a giant red neon sculpture in the middle of the lush forest.

On one of his treks through Arizona's White Mountains area, photographer Dale Schicketanz was caught in an afternoon thunderstorm in the Escudilla Wilderness. Ahead of him, lightning struck a ponderosa pine, and it pulsated red electric heat. It's one of Schicketanz's most memorable outdoor images.

He'll share his experiences in the cool White Mountains and his noted photographic skills during a fascinating Arizona Highways Photo Workshop that focuses on alpine scenery, the Coronado Trail, and a working ranch, August 18 through 21. Guided by Schicketanz, participants will photograph sites along the Coronado Trail, perhaps near the route Spanish conquistadores believed led to the legendary Seven Cities of Cibola. Featured photo "subjects" will include streams, waterfalls, meadows, and wildlife. There will be some hiking, including one trek to a mysterious falls.

Another way to see Arizona's stunning White Mountains is by horseback, and you can do this by way of a special Friends Scenic Tour, August 15 through 19. Outfitted by Don Donnelly Stables, the tour is for riders of all experience levels. You'll enjoy hot showers, home cookin', and fireside cowboy tales.
