Photo Adventures
hoto Adventures Focusing on Next Year's Photo Workshops
The world's best scenic photographers and many of the world's most stunning vistas are highlights of the 1995 Photo Workshops sponsored by the Friends of Arizona Highways. The workshops offer special opportunities for picture takers of all skill levels to learn from our master photographers the tips and techniques they use to capture Arizona's breathtaking natural beauty. Nikon, Hasselblad, Fuji, and Image Craft will provide equipment, materials, and technical representatives for the workshops. In addition to providing a unique opportunity for handson photo instruction from the pros, these trips also take participants to some of the most extraordinary spots in the state and offer a range of adventures, as well. The Missions and Ghost Towns workshop, March 8 through 11, travels deep into Arizona's storied past when shoot-outs and tales of conquistadores and lost gold mines rocked senses lulled by the sublime countryside, with its pockets of rough civilization and centuries-old Spanish missions. A trek to the Sonoran Desert is set for March 22 through 25, when the landscape comes alive with an artist's palette of colorful spring wildflowers popping up to fill arroyos and embrace hillsides. With their labyrinthine twists and turns, the sculpted multihued Slot Canyons of the far northern part of the state are a geologic puzzle waiting to be solved on a workshop May 3 through 6. Rugged Paria River Canyon will be the site for the Slot Canyon Backpack workshop, May 16 through 20. The river exposes more than 200 million years of geologic history in its breathtaking gorges. This is the perfect trip for the hearty backpacking photo enthusiast. Two trips are planned to Canyon de Chelly, the ancient home of the mysterious Anasazi. Navajo guides will lead participants throughout the maze of red sandstone canyons and cliff dwellings, May 24 through 27 and October 4 through 7. The Grand Canyon's wondrous and remote North Rim will host two workshops as well. A trip July 26 through 29 takes participants along the wild back roads of the scenic Kaibab Plateau to photograph summer's remarkable forest greens and sky blues. In autumn, the Rim changes its wardrobe to spectacular crimson and gold. Capturing this transformation on film will be the goal of a trip set for October 2 through 7. Another autumn experience not to be missed is Arizona's red rock country, including Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon. Participants will travel by Jeep through this majestic wonderland October 25 through 28. Participation in Photo Workshops is limited, and many fill quickly. Scenic Tours also are available.
