Friends Travel Adventures Focusing on Cowboys and Prescott's Famed Rodeo
Capturing the grueling, dusty, bustling life of the rodeo cowboythat's the feature of one of the most popular Photo Workshops sponsored by the Friends of Arizona Highways. In 1995 it's set for July 1 through 4 in Prescott. The big event of the instructional session is the Prescott Rodeo, held in July each year and renowned as the oldest rodeo in the world.
The workshop will be led by Ken Akers, a noted outdoor photographer whose work has appeared in such publications as Arizona Highways, Sports Illustrated, Time, Business Week, Parade, and Cosmopolitan. Akers will use colorful Prescott and its rodeo grounds as a “classroom” for photo enthusiasts.
The workshop will begin with check-in at the historic Hassayampa Inn, instruction from Akers, and first-day shooting at the rodeo. Nighttime fun will include a cookout and cowboy portraiture session.
No trip to Prescott is complete without a visit to notori-ous Whiskey Row, which will be included in the second day's activities. Participants will also visit and photograph historic Prescott sites and structures.
A visit to a working cattle ranch will be the feature the third day, with cameras aimed at cow-boys on roundup and branding cattle. The trip concludes with an on-the-town jaunt the third night, final instructions from Akers during the morning on the fourth day, and another rodeo shoot on July the Fourth.
