FRIENDS TRAVEL ADVENTURES Follow the Trail of the Great American Cowboy

We imagine him galloping after a stray calf, burning the brand on the flanks of his cattle, and resting under the stars with a steaming cup of strong black coffee. He's our embodiment of the American West; he's the Great American Cowboy, and he lives and works today in nearly the same conditions as he did more than a century ago. The Great American Cowboy will be the focus of a five-day fall Photo Workshop coordinated by the Friends of Arizona Highways. Set for October 23 through 27, the workshop will be held at the White Stallion Dude Ranch near Tucson. Instructor for the workshop will be Ken Akers, a photographer who is noted for his stunning outdoor lens artistry.

Akers' work has been featured in Arizona Highways and other national publications, including Cosmopolitan, Sports Illustrated, Time, Parade, and Business Week.

During the day workshop, students will learn the art of photographing the cowboy at work on the range, doing things like chasing and roping cattle. The evenings will feature instruction on how to take stunning photographs at sunset, twilight horseback rides along a mountain ridge, cowboy tale sessions, and other entertainment.

An interesting note is that the White Stallion Dude Ranch has been the setting for several Hollywood movies. Besides the traditional cowboy settings, it offers guests a full range of leisure activities, including swimming and tennis.
