Code Talking Is What Married Folks Do Best

Arizona arizona Navajos played an especially strategic part in World War II. They used a code, based on their complex language, that the Japanese in the South Pacific found impossible to break.

The Navajo Codetalkers helped rout the enemy on Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Bougainville, Guam, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, as well as in Burma and China. They made an impressive contribution.

But I feel that any couple who have been married over 30 years have developed their own form of code talking. This is a typical exchange my wife and I might have over breakfast: She starts. "So what do you have planned for...."

They're closed. Remember when we were there last week, we saw the sign in the....""I didn't go. That's the day I had the...."

"That's right. And you didn't get any sympathy from me. I told you to....""I did, but it didn't help. Anyway, maybe I'll run up to...."

"Why go all the way....""Because it's faster than going to...."

"You say that all the time, but I don't believe...."

"Well, it...."

"If you insist on going there, would you stop and pick me up...."

"What color? Do you want them to match the...."

"What else would I want them to...."

"I don't know. That's why I'm asking. How...."

"Six. And don't put them on the...."

"Why not? Is it because you still don't trust that...."

"I certainly don't. Do you know what he did the last time I...."

"He told me about it. But he said...." "Well, isn't that just like...." "Then you'll have to give me some...."

"Take the money out of my "Where is...."

"On the...." "Yeah, I see it. Then we change the subject I think. I ask, "Did you see the end of that movie last night?"

"You mean the one about the mysterious island where the guy...."

"I don't know. I fell asleep before that. How did it...."

"How do you think it...."

"If I knew I wouldn't ask. Did she...."

"Why should she? It was up to him to...."

"That's ridiculous. You're just saying that because...."

"That's not the reason at all. I'm saying it because...."

"Oh sure. Every time I say you're saying that because, you say you're saying it because.... You know what I think...."

"You would think that. That's why I always say...."

"You've never said that. All I wanted to know was how the movie...."

"If you want to know that you should have...."

"Next time I...."

"Well, you'd better." Another change of subject I suppose.

My wife says, "Enough of this chitchat. I have to get ready."

"Why? Where are you.... "I told you. It's Thursday and I...."

"When are you...."

"Whenever I get ready. But don't worry about...."

"I'll get my own lunch. How long...."

"I'll come home as soon as it's over. However...."

"I'll get my own dinner. Did you...."

"It's in the freezer. Just pop it in the...."

"I know how to cook it, but I hate.

"For one night, it won't.... "Can't you...."

"I'm not going to cancel. I don't know why you...."

"I'll tell you why. Because it means I'll have to spend the whole day around here with no one to talk to."
