ROUTE 66

Born in the Roaring '20s, America's Main Street became a symbol of hope in the Great Depression as motorists chased their dreams westward. In the late 1940s, it blossomed into the place to go as Americans reveled in the peacetime plenty that followed World War II. Arizona's portion of the route between Illinois and California brought great scenery and a new generation of roadside oddities and kitsch. Parts of the concrete ribbon, some of the businesses and most of the memories remain today.
