AUGUST, 1933 ARIZONA HIGHWAYS State Projects Under Construction In Arizona DISTRICT NO. 1

Geo. B. Shaffer, District Engineer Pearson and Dickerson have completed the oil processing on F. A. 80-A, Ashfork-Kingman highway, U. S. 66 (approximately 16 miles), near Peach Springs. R. C. Bond, resident engineer.

Martin Bros. Trucking Co. has completed the placing of subgrade stabilizer and oil processing of approximately 1534 miles on the Phoenix-Prescott Highway, E. 84 B. and C., beginning at Wickenburg and extending to Congress Junction. W. J. Jamieson, resident engineer.

Martin Brothers Trucking Co. has completed the grading and draining of approximately 3 miles on the Ashfork-Kingman Highway, located approximately 30 miles northeast of Kingman (E-80-F.) Percy Jones Sr., resident engineer.

The Arizona Sand and Rock Co. has completed the grading, draining, placing of subgrade stabilizer and oil processing by the Plant Mix Method of approximately eight miles on the Phoenix-Prescott Highway, F. A. E-72-A, beginning at the western boundary of the Prescott National Forest and extending southeasterly. James Parker, resident engineer.

DISTRICT NO. 2

F. N. Grant, District Engineer The New Mexico Construction Co. has completed the oil processing on F. A. 89-D and E., Ash Fork-Flagstaff highway, (which begins about one mile east of Williams and extends approximately 17 miles towards Flagstaff.) F. J. Beeghly, resident engineer.

Hodgman and MacVicar has the contract for grading, draining and placing of subgrade stabilizer on nine miles of the Flagstaff-Fredonia Highway, F. A. E-95-D, and F. L. H. P. E-4-A, beginning at the Grand Canyon Bridge and extending south, 80 per cent complete. H. B. Wright, Resident Engineer.

The Arizona Sand and Rock Co. has been awarded a contract for the placing of subgrade stabilizer and oil processing by the plant mix method of approximately 5.9 miles on the HolbrookSt. Johns Highway, E. 78-B and F., beginning at the end of the pavement in Holbrook and extending east on Route 260. Packard and Tanner have started construction on the surfacing and oiling of approximately 21 miles of the Holbrook-Winslow Highway by the plant mix method, F. A. Project E. 40, be Beginning at Holbrook and extending west. Floyd J. Beeghly, resident engineer.

DISTRICT NO. 3

R. C. Perkins, District Engineer L. E. Dixon has the grading, and draining on F. A. Project 99-D on the Globe-Showlow Highway (which begins at Seven Mile Draw, about 19 miles northeast of Globe and extends northeasterly approximately 11/4 miles, 87 per cent complete. A. F. Rath, resident engineer.

L. E. Dixon has the grading and draining on F. A. E-99-C, Globe-Showlow Highway, (which begins about 114 miles N. E. of Globe and extends northeasterly for a distance of approximately 114 miles) 86 per cent complete. A. F. Rath, resident engineer.

DISTRICT NO. 4

W. R. Hutchins, District Engineer R. H. Martin has completed the contract for the grading, draining and placing of subgrade stabilizer on F. A. Project E-18-B Benson-Vail Highway, (which begins at the north end of the Cienega Creek bridge and extends easterly about 6.35 miles). J. R. Van Horn, resident engineer.

ROAD CONDITIONS, Arizona State Highway System

These conditions were reported as of Aug. 4, 1933. Changes will occur on roads under construction according to progress of the work. Editor's Note.

U. S. Route 80, Yuma to Rodeo, 510 miles-All paved, oil surfaced or graveled. Condition good.

U. S. Route 66, Topock to Lupton, 396 miles Gravel surfaced, oiled or paved. Condition good.

State Route 88, Apache Trail Junction to Globe, 83 miles-Gravel surface. Condition good.

U. S. Route 180, Florence Junction to state line, 183 miles-Paved and oil surfaced, good condition.

State Route 73, Cutter to McNary, 104 miles Gravel surfaced, Cutter to Rice and White River to McNary, otherwise unimproved.

State Route 71, Coronado Trail, Clifton Junction to Springerville, 157 miles -Gravel and partly surfaced.

State Route 84, Tucson to Gila Bend, 124 miles Oil surfaced Tucson to Casa Grande; gravel surfaced Casa Grande to Gila Bend.

U. S. Route 260, Holbrook to state line, 100 miles-Gravel surfaced condition good to excellent.

State Route 79, Prescott to Flagstaff, 91 miles-Gravel or oil surfaced to Sedona; Sedona to Flagstaff, graded and drained.

U. S. Route 60, Showlow to Ehrenberg, 342 miles. Showlow to Globe under construction; Globe to Wickenburg oiled and paved; Wickenburg to Ehrenberg gravel surfaced and oiled.

State Route 81, Douglas to Safford, 128 miles Gravel surfaced. Condition good.

State Route 83 Vail Junction to Sonoita, 28 miles-Gravel surfaced. Good. State Route 82, Nogales to Tombstone Junction, 70 miles Gravel surfaced. Good.

U. S. Route 89, Nogales to Fredona-Gravel, oil and paved surface to Flagstaff, graded and drained to 40 miles north of Cameron. Inquire Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce as to condition of U. S. 89 North of Flagstaff.

State Route 87, Chandler to Picacho, 51 miles oil surfaced.

State Route 187, Sacaton Dam to Casa Grande, 13 miles-Gravel surfaced. Condition good.

A question often asked by motorists is answered by E. V. Miller, engineer of plans in the Arizona state highway department, in reply to a tourist from Pittsburgh, Pa. what is the grade of the scenic Globe-Superior Highway and the maximum depth of Queen Creek Canyon, through which it threads? The grade, Mr. Miller wrote, is 6 per cent, and the canyon's depth near Claypool tunnel, from the creek bed to the crest of the hill, is approximately 1200 feet.
