Summer is just around the corner, but the "unofficial" summer season kicks off this weekend at Salt River Tubing.

The river is flowing and open to visitors for extended hours over Memorial Day weekend. On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, visitors can tube down the river from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The last tube rental will be at 2 p.m.

The 24th Annual "Salt River Heroes = Litter Zero" event is also taking place this weekend. This program encourages visitors to keep the river clean while enjoying the beauty of the area. The first 500 tubers on the river each day will receive free "patriotic leis" during the holiday weekend.

Tube rental and transportation to and from the river costs $17 per person. Children must be at least 8 or older and at least 4 feet tall to be able to rent a tube. There are several other rules and safety tips outlined on the Salt River Tubing website.
