In most places in the Northern Hemisphere, summer is the time for being outside. In the Sonoran Desert, where the temperature usually hits the triple digits, that''s not always such a good idea. Instead, we look to cool our heels in the high country. That''s what this collection is all about.

PRECEDING PANEL: Rugged pines frame a view from the Mogollon Rim, one of Arizona's defining topographical features. This escarpment, which forms the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, is home to numerous hiking, boating, fishing and sightseeing opportunities.

LEFT: Ferns surround aspen trunks along a forest road near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. In contrast to the ponderosa pine forests of the South Rim, the mixed conifer forests on the North Rim harbor Engelmann spruce, Douglas firs and other evergreens, in addition to aspens. DEREK VON BRIESEN RIGHT: Yellow wildflowers, green foliage, orange sandstone and blue-gray desert varnish mingle along the West Fork of Oak Creek, near Sedona. The trail along the West Fork is one of Arizona's most popular hiking routes. DEREK VON BRIESEN
