ROAD PROJECTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION DISTRICT NO. 1
J. R. Van Horn, District Engineer Fisher Contracting Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has the Contract 95% complete for Grading and Draining the Roadway, importing binder material, mixing binder, and local material, and oil processing the mixed material with MC-4 cutback Asphalt, also the construction of 1-3 span timber deck bridge and 1-7 span timber deck bridge on the San Luis-Yuma Highway. Beginning at the town of San Luis and extending approximately 3 miles northerly. Construction started on August 22nd, 1938 and was to have been completed by October 31st, 1938. Oswald Bros. Contractors, Phoenix, Arizona, has the contract 62% complete for the grading and draining the roadway over a re-located line, placing aggregate Base course and Oil processing the road, using SC-4 Road Oil, road mix. The re-construction of the 65' arch bridge over the San Domingo Wash and the construction and widening of concrete boxes and culverts on approximately 1.5 miles of the Phoenix-Prescott Highway. Beginning at the San Domingo Wash Bridge and extending northerly. Construction started on August 29th 1938 and is to be completed by January 15th, 1939. Federal Aid Project 59 (4). E. L. Yeager Contractor, Phoenix, Arizona, has the Contract 47% complete for the grading and draining the roadway over a new located line placing aggregate base course and bituminous treating the road. The constructing of 1-3 span 10'x6' concrete box culvert on approximately 4.75 miles of the Ajo-Gila Bend Highway. Beginning at the town of Ajo and ex-tending northerly. Construction started October 3rd, 1938, and is to be completed by March 15th, 1939. Federal Aid Sec-ondary Project 120-C (1). H. Pinney, Resident Engineer.
U. S. Highway 93 connects Kingman and U. S. 66 with Boulder dam. Modern roadbuilders cut deep gashes in rolling hills to assure a level, fast riding surface with plenty of sight-distance.
In District No. 1, there are three State Sponsored W.P.A. Projects, which we think should appear under Road Projects Under Construction. These are: State and W. P. A. forces have completed 800 feet of paving on U. S. Highway 89 in Prescott. Included in this project was a grade change, placing of 70' width of P.C.C. pavement, and necessary curbs and gutters, with appurtenant drainage structures. J. A. Quigley, Resident Engineer.
State and W.P.A. forces are widening and sloping cuts on U. S. Highway 89 east of the city limits of Prescott. The improvement will provide room for pedestrians to the side of the roadway. J. A. Quigley, Resident Engineer.
State and W.P.A. forces are widening and sloping cuts and widening curves and placing guard fence on the Prescott-Jerome Highway, U. S. 79 on Mingus Mountain. J. A. Quigley, Resident Engineer.

DISTRICT NO. 2

N. G. Hill and Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has the contract 4% complete for the grading and draining the roadway over a new located line. Placing import-ed borrow and a select material over the roadway. Constructing about 10-6'x7' concrete box culverts on approximately 9.8 miles of the Showlow-Holbrook High-way, beginning near Showlow and extend-ing northerly. Construction started No-vember 2nd, 1938, and is to be completed by July 31st, 1939. Federal Aid Project 136-A (1). J. B. Robinson, Resident Engineer.
In District No. 2, there are two State Sponsored W.P.A. Projects, which we think should appear under Road Projects Under Construction. These are: State and W.P.A. forces have completed widening of 1600 feet on U. S. 66 In Winslow, from an 18 foot pavement to a 60 foot pavement with curbs, gutters and sidewalks. Also included in this project was the widening of a 10-Span 10x7 bridge culvert from 28 foot to a 60 foot clear roadway. Work was started in May, 1938, and has been under the supervision of C. J. Houck, Transitman.
State and W.P.A. forces have the widening and surfacing of the McNary-Ft. Apache Highway 60% complete. Equip ment on this project is furnished by the Apache Indian Service. Work was started in June, 1938, and is under the super vision of S. C. Redd, Resident Engineer.
DISTRICT NO. 3
R. C. Perkins, District Engineer Tanner Construction Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has the contract 49% complete for the grading and draining the roadway over a new located line. Placing an imported borrow capping over the roadway. Constructing a new 5-25' continuous span slab bridge, a new 3-25' continuous slab bridge, a Dbl. 10'x10' concrete box culvert and 9 miscellaneous size concrete box culverts on approximately 4.33 miles of the SolomonvilleDuncan Highway. Beginning about 18.5 miles east of Solomonville and extending Easterly. Construction started on September 28th, 1938, and is to be completed by August 15th, 1939. Federal Aid Project 77-C (1). P. F. Lee Moor Contracting Company, El Paso, Texas, has the contract 1% complete for subgrading the roadway and refinishing the slopes, furnishing and placing select material, applying SC-6 Road Oil Plant Mix, type "B" Seal Coat and Asphaltic Surface Treating the roadway, on approximately 3.89 miles of the GlobeShowlow Highway. Beginning about 50 miles Northeast of Globe and extending Southwesterly, and is to be completed by October 31st, 1939. Federal Lands Project 6-B. C. B. Browning, Resident Engineer.
El Paso, Texas, has the contract 1% complete for subgrading the roadway and re-finishing the slopes, furnishing and placing select material, applying SC-6 Road Oil Plant Mix, Type "B" Seal Coat and Asphaltic Surface treating the roadway on approximately 3.1 miles of the Globe-Showlow Highway beginning about 46.1 miles Northeast of Globe and extending Southwesterly, and is to be completed by October 31st, 1939. Not long ago a Flagstaff C. of C. official as a jest said free room and board would be provided in Flagstaff when U. S. Highway 66 near there was ever officially closed because of snow. A storm of Arctic proportions would have to be in order to stymie alert maintenance crews in keeping this important highway open.

Placing a select material and cutback Road Mix over the roadway. Constructing 1-3 Span 10'x7' concrete box culvert; 1-2 span 10'x7' concrete box culvert and 10 miscellaneous size concrete bridge and box culverts on approximately 4.5 miles of the Ft. Huachuca-Bisbee Highway. Beginning at the town of Don Luis and extending Southwesterly. Construction started on September 10th, 1938, and is to be completed by January 15th, 1939. Packard Contracting Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has the contract 8% complete for the re-grading and draining the roadway, placing an aggregate base course, applying an asphaltic surface treatment using an SC-2 Road Oil on the Roadway, Re-constructing dips and etc. on 10.75 miles of the Douglas-Safford Highway. Beginning about 8.5 miles north of Douglas and extending northerly to the town of McNeal. Construction started on November 8th, 1938, and is to be completed by April 30th, 1939. Tanner Construction Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has the contract 7% complete for the grading and draining the roadway over a new located line. Placing an aggregate base course and oil processing the roadway, using an SC-2 road oil, Road Mix. Constructing 3-3 span 10'x4' concrete box culverts, 1-2 span 10'x4' concrete box culvert, 1-2 span 10'x6' concrete box culvert, a 5-30' continuous span concrete slab Bridge and a 4-25' continuous span concrete slab Bridge on 4.7 miles of the Benson-Steins Pass Highway. Tanner Construction Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has contract 1% complete for the reconstructing of the floor of the three span bridge in place over the San Pedro River at Benson. In District No. 4, there are eight State Sponsored W.P.A. Projects, which we think should appear under Road Projects Under Construction. These are: State and W.P.A. forces are widening shoulders and small structures and slop-ing and rounding cuts on U. S. 89 TucsonNogales Highway. State and W.P.A. forces are grading, draining and surfacing on the Nogales-Sonoita Highway, State 82. The work begins at the Banks Bridge in Nogales and extends two miles east of Patagonia including several line and grade changes and appurtenant drainage construction and fencing. R. C. Route 3, Flagstaff-Clints Well Highway, Coconino National Forest H. J. Hagen, Globe, Arizona, on November 26, 1938 completed contract for grading and placing heavy crushed base course on Section F of Arizona Forest Highway Route 3, Flagstaff-Clints Well. Project begins at the south end of Mormon Lake and extends 2.594 miles northerly. F. A. Bonnel, resident engineer.
Route 7, Oak Creek, Cononino National Forest Lewis Brothers, Contractors, Phoenix, Arizona, on October 31, 1938 completed a contract for construction of a steel arch bridge over Wilson Canyon, about 27 miles southwest of Flagstaff, Arizona on the Oak Creek Highway. The bridge consists of a main span of 240 feet and approach spans totaling 100 feet. V. G. Watson, resident engineer.

Route 17, Snowflake-Pinetop, Sitgreaves National Forest W. E. Orr, Phoenix, Arizona has the contract for grading, draining and placing borrow backfill on a portion of Section B of Arizona Forest Highway Route 17, Snowflake-Pinetop. Project begins approximately 2 miles north of Pinetop and extends 3.175 miles northwest to a point approximately 2 miles north of Lakeside. Work was started October 5, 1938 and is about 65% complete. Route 19, Clifton-Alpine Highway, Crook National Forest All Arizona Engineering and Construction Company, Clifton, Arizona, has the contract for grading, draining and placing cushion material on a portion of Section B of Arizona Highway Route 19, Clifton-Alpine. Project begins approximately 45 miles north of Clifton and extends northerly 6.115 miles. Work was started September 13, 1938 and is about 70% complete. E. F. Koch, resident engineer.
Route 28, Fredonia-Houserock Valley Highway, Coconino National Forest Fisher Contracting Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has the contract for grading and placing base course surfacing with light bituminous treatment on portions of Section C and D of Arizona Forest Highway Route 28, Fredonia-Houserock Valley. Project is located between points approximately 3 to 16 miles north of Jacob Lake. The length of roadway between these points covered by the project is 6.137 miles long. PROJECTS UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Route 7, Oak Creek Highway, Coconino National Forest Pearson and Dickerson, Contractors, Inc., Prescott, Arizona have the contract for grading, draining and placing base course surfacing with light bituminous treatment on a portion of Section B of Arizona Forest Highway Route 7, Oak Creek. Project begins 0.6 miles north of Sedona and extends 3.577 miles northerly to Indian Gardens. Work started November 21, 1938 and is about 5% completed.

Fisher Contracting Company, Phoenix, Arizona, has the contract for grading, draining and placing base course surfacing with light bituminous treatment on a section of the Jacob Lake-North Rim Approach to Grand Canyon National Park. Project begins at Jacob Lake and extends south 1.278 miles. Work was suspended for the winter on November 23, 1938 and is about 95% complete. C. R. Brashears, resident engineer. Bids were opened on December 8, 1938 for grading, draining and placing crushed run rock top course with a light bituminous treatment on portions of Section C and D of Arizona Forest Highway Route 28, Fredonia-Houserock Valley. Project begins at Jacob Lake and extends 11 miles northerly towards Fredonia.
