IT PAYS TO ADVERTISE

(At least it did in the early days of the old west) It WOULD be extremely interesting to trace the development of advertising from its beginning its successful and unsuccessful methods, styles and values. Surely it has paid to advertise else advertising would long since have ceased to exist. In its infancy, mediums were of necessity few, and ads were fewer and certainly their cost was very little. Today advertising has grown to be one of the world's greatest industries, if it may be called that, as well as a most costly and successful enterprise.

For the benefit of this article, the stained and brittle sheets of Arizona's early-day newspapers have been scanned, and of necessity, the treatise has been confined to those papers from the 1880's to the early 1900's. The motive too has been to reflect the more humorous side of Arizona's pioneer ads, which at the time were the latest and most influential in style and apAppeal, while today, with advertising progressing at a terrific streamlined pace, these old ads produce many a chuckle and bring back fond memories of the gay early days to many old timers who helped make the west.

Before laws were passed prohibiting the advertising of cure-alls, this type of salesmanship through the medium of newspapers held a most prominent spot. From the Tombstone Epitaph, 1886, the following sure-cures appeared: "Dr. Flint's Heart Remedy has saved more lives by timely use, and has kept from suicide and insane asylum more victims of nervous disorders, than all the physicians with their pet methods of treatment.

The dental profession came in for its share of advertising in the early days. From the Prescott Courier of 1901, the public was advised that, "Dr. Gonzales is down in Phoenix making full sets of teeth for $7.50 a set. With teeth at that price, no alfalfa grazer should hesitate about a full equipment of teeth."

"Dr. Warnekros's dental office," says the Tombstone Epitaph, 1889, "is well equipped with all modern facilities and instruments needed in the art of mending teeth, or extracting them and inserting new ones; the work being well done and charges reasonable."

On the care of teeth, the following is a far cry from the ads Grandpa remembers when shirts pulled over the head like sacks and only territorial dudes sported about in buttoned ones.
