PHOENIX TO PRESCOTT HASSAYAMPA TRAIL, U.S.89-113 MILES. Leaving Phoenix, go west on Van Buren Street to Grand Ave. Pavement 16 miles, gravel surfaced to Wickenburg. River crossing at Wickenburg good, except when Hassayampa river is up, when State maintains tow service during day, only. Construction work on Wickenburg bridge. Wickenburg to Congress Junction, gravel surface 15 miles. Construction work about one mile north of Wickenburg, fair detour. Congress Junction to Prescott, excellent road through Peoples Valley and over mountain grade 44 miles.
PRESCOTT TO ASHFORK, U.S.8953 MILES. Gravel surface, good condition 53 miles except detour account of paving from Prescott to Granite Dells, U.S.66. To Flagstaff 57 miles, to Cameron 54 miles; road fair condition; to Lee's Ferry 63 miles; Fredonia 80 miles; desert road unimproved. Only experienced drivers should travel over this road north of Cameron. For information call at White Garage or Bank at Williams, or Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce, regarding condition of road north to National Old Trails, Route 66.
ROUTE U. S. 80-89. New cut off from Tucson to junction of Route 80 and Route 89, road in excellent condition. Leave the pavement a short distance south of the old road.
Route 80 between Benson and St. David, repairing culvert south of St. David. Drive carefully through dips.
On State Route 82, Tombstone-Nogales, Fairbanks bridge closed for repairs, detour at Tombstone via Charleston.
PHOENIX TO NOGALES, U.S. 80 and 89, 203 MILES. Leave Phoenix on East Van Buren Street. Paved through Tempe, Mesa to Desert Wells, 23 miles. Gravel surfaced followed by 5 miles of pavement to Florence Junction. Gravel surfaced, rough with loose gravel in places. Drive slowly through dips and washes. To Florence 68 miles. Florence to Tucson 68 miles. Excellent highway 63 miles. Pavement 5 miles to Tucson. Tucson to Nogales 67 miles. Excellent gravel surfaced highway to pavement near Nogales. From Tucson to Nogales U.S.89.
PHOENIX TO YUMA, 199 MILESOLD SPANISH TRAIL BROADWAY OF AMERICA, U.S.80. Leave Phoenix on West Van Buren Street. Phoenix to Hassayampa 44 miles; paved. Hassayampa to Gila Bend 35 miles, gravel surfaced, rough in places, loose gravel; deep dips. Drive at moderate speed. Gila Bend to Yuma, 120 miles, gravel surfaced. Drive carefully through dips and washes particularly in vicinity of Aztec and Sentinel to Wellton, Wellton to Yuma loose gravel. Fair road to pavement. Account of construction work, detour. Paved 5 miles through to Colorado River Bridge.
PHOENIX TO DOUGLAS AND RODEO OLD SPANISH TRAIL BROADWAY OF AMERICA-U.S.80. Leave Phoenix on East Van Buren Street, paved through Tempe, Mesa to Desert Wells 23 miles, gravel surfaced with loose gravel in places. Drive slowly through dips and washes. Paved 5 miles to Florence Junction. Gravel surfaced to Florence. Florence to Tucson 68 miles, excellent highway 63 miles, pavement 6 miles. Leave Tucson via South Stone Avenue, Vail and Benson to Tombstone. Construction new location Tucson to Vail. Prescott road used as detour. Leaving Tombstone, pavement 16.2 miles, gravel surfaced through Tombstone Canyon to one mile from Bisbee; paved through Bisbee and Lowell to Douglas. Douglas to Rodeo 51 miles. Construction new location near Douglas, use present road as detour. Gravel surfaced rough in places.
PHOENIX TO GLOBE AND SAFFORD, U.S.80, U.S.180. Leave Phoenix on East Van Buren Street. Paved through Tempe and Mesa to Desert Wells, 23 miles. Gravel surface followed by 5 miles of pavement to Florence Junction, Florence Junction 40 miles; Florence Junction to Superior, 16 miles, gravel surfaced road, good condition. To Miami 21 miles, excellent mountain road, gravel surfaced. Paved to Globe, 7 miles, gravel surfaced to Geronimo, paved 21 miles through Safford and Solomonville, good graded road through Duncan to State Line.
AND S.73. Leave Phoenix on East Van Buren Street through Tempe, Meas to Florence Junction, Miami, Globe to Rice, 116 miles. See Globe Highway. Through McNary to Springerville 138 miles, very good condition except Sawmill Hill between Rice and White River. White River to Spring ville very scenic trip.
PHOENIX TO TOPOCK STATE LINE-337 MILES. Phoenix to Ash fork, Hassayampa Trail, U.S.89. Ashfork to Topock 167 miles. Ashfork to Seligman 25 miles, cinder and gravel surfaced, excellent. Seligman to Kingman, 91 miles, improved graded highway with occasional washes near Truxton Indian School, fair condition. Kingman to Oatman 29 miles over mountain grades, sharp curves, fair condition. To Topok 26 miles, improved graded highway.
PHOENIX TO LUPTON, 390 MILES -U.S.89, U.S.66. Phoenix to Ashfork via Hassayampa Trail, 167 miles. Ashfork to Lupton 223 miles. Ashfork to Flagstaff 57 miles, cinder surfaced road. Williams to Maine, narrow road. Flagstaff to Holbrook 93 miles, macadam 23 miles, excellent. Gravel surfaced through Winslow to Holbrook. Hoit ook to Lupton 76 miles, good graded road, partially gravel surfaced.
PHOENIX TO PRESCOTT BLACK CANYON ROAD-103 MILES. Good except in wet weather. Sharp curves and steep grades.
PHOENIX TO TUCSON, VIA CASA GRANDE, U.S.80; S.87, 126 MILES. Leave Phoenix on East Van Buren Street, paved through Tempe, Mesa and Chandler to 4 miles south of Chandler, followed by excellent gravel road 16 miles to detour, 4 miles to Gila River Bridge, detour rough. Excellent surfaced road to Casa Grande, 17 miles. Casa Grande to Tucson 66 miles, gravel surfaced nearly all the way, somewhat rough. Toltec to Elroy 6 miles. Balance good to pavement 5 miles from Tucson.
PHOENIX TO ROOSEVELT DAM GLOBE-APACHE TRAIL-155 MILES. Leave Phoenix on East Van Buren Street, U.S.80, to Apache Junction 31 miles, Roosevelt Dam 47 miles, excellent scenic mountain road. Roosevelt to Globe, S.88, 37 miles, gravel surfaced, excellent. Tonto Cliff Dwellings near Highway.
Gravel surface, 10 miles. Graded road to Wenden, gravel surfaced to Salome. 53 miles. Gravel surfaced to Quartzite. Road from Wickenburg west to Quartzite very rough. High centers and cross washed. All travel going via Bouse. Fair desert road to Ehrenburg. Ehrenburg Bridge closed. Ferry in operation daytime only. Charges $2.50 per car.
PHOENIX TO SPRINGERVILLE VIA GLOBE AND RICE, U.S.80; U.S.180 SPRINGERVILLE ROUTE, U.S.70. Halbrook via Springerville to State Line 109 miles; to St. Johns 64 miles, to Springerville 29 miles, good gravel surfaced road; to State Line 16 miles, gravel, good condition. Repair work on culverts.
GRAND CANYON U. S. HIGHWAY. Williams to Grand Canyon, 63 miles, unsurfaced graded road to Rain Tanks. Rain Tanks to Grand Canyon graveled road. Maine to Grand Canyon, 65 miles, graded road, unsurfaced. Not good in wet weather. Inquire White Garage or Bank at Williams, or Main Station before traveling these roads. Entrance fee at Grand Canyon $1.00 per car.
PRESCOTT JEROME AND OAK CREEK ROAD, Prescott to Jerome 33 miles, mountain road, gravel surfaced, excellent. Gravel surfaced througn Clarkdale to Sedona 24 miles fair condition. Steep grades and sharp curves through Oak Creek Canyon, to Flagstaff 29 miles. Oak Creek Canyon section in fair condition. Very scenic highway.
GLOBE TO COOLIDGE DAM. Turn southeast from Globe Highway 6 miles east of Globe. New road to Coolidge Dam, 19 miles, excellent condition.
NOGALES-TOMBSTONE, S.82. Nogales to Tombstone 75 miles. Nogales to Patagonia 23 miles, gravel surfaced. To Sonoita 12 miles, gravel surfaced. Fairbanks 31 miles. To Tombstone (Continued on page 24)
