Governor Phillips Issues Invitation To Attend Dedication Ceremonies Of The Grand Canyon Bridge

ARIZONA HIGHWAYS VACATION LAND, 1929 GOVERNOR PHILLIPS ISSUES INVITATION TO ATTEND DEDICATION CEREMONIES OF GRAND CANYON BRIDGE
TO THE PEOPLE OF ARIZONA AND THE GREAT SOUTHWEST:ARIZONA, in company with other states of the Southwest, on June 14 and 15, will celebrate the completion of the Grand Canyon Bridge over the Colorado River near Lee's Ferry. This bridge is a wonderful engineering achievement, and marks another triumph of man over nature. The structure is 834 feet in length, and stands 467 feet above the waters of the river, making it one of the highest highway bridges in the world. The cost is approximately $350,000.
In addition to its value as an engineering triumph, this bridge links Arizona and Utah, and opens up a tourist traffic which has not heretofore reached us. Highway No. 89 will now bisect such well-known and heavily traveled east and west highways as the Santa Fe, Lincoln, Victory, Old Oregon Trail and the Yellowstone, and will bring to Arizona thousands of automobile travelers to enjoy our glorious scenery. It will also make closer neighbors and friends of our neighboring states, California, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and New Mexico. We are fortunate in having this bridge completed at a time when we are enjoying such an era of prosperity, and a healthy steady growth, and those who are attracted by this north and south highway will have an opportunity to see for themselves our great resources and possibilities. I hope that the residents of Arizona will attend the dedication ceremonies in large numbers, and by their presence assist in making the event a success. I know that the men in charge of the ceremonies will make the celebration one which will bring to Arizona a well-merited and valuable publicity. We hope to see you all at the bridge on June 14th and 15th. Very truly yours, JOHN C. PHILLIPS. Governor of Arizona.
