First there was the sea, the ancient sea, which covered the land and then the sea subsided. All that remained was slime and goo and out of this things grew, plant and animal. This was a long time ago, 150 to 180 million years ago, and what do a few million years or so matter between friends. That was when the song of the phytosaur was heard in the land. That was when the story of our Petrified Forest began.

We dedicate our pages this month to that weird and strangely beautiful area, to that land of fantastic color, to that gleaming repository of jeweled logs the like of which cannot be found elsewhere on the earth. We take you, with considerable pride, to Petrified Forest National Park.

Proclaimed a National Monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Petrified Forest was elevated to National Park status late last year, and no area in this wonderful country of ours better deserves the title.

Here, in the vast expanse of Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert, you will find scenery the like of which you have never experienced before. Here you can read the story of the earth, boldly written as if in a large, precious book by truly the Master's hand. Here you can browse around in a library that contains the message and wisdom of all creation. Here you sense the whisperings of time that go back to when time first began.

Petrified Forest National Park, under the custodianship of dedicated men and women of the National Park Service, is one of America's treasures. The petrified wood and fossilized jewels are yours to enjoy. But a word of caution: leave all you see as it has been for ages. People with sticky fingers can get into trouble. During last October, for instance, eighteen people were arrested and fined for thoughtlessly and carelessly picking up a petrified souvenir or two in the Park. What's there is yours; only leave it there and enjoy it... R.C.
