Former Senator Barry Goldwater drew the names of the lucky winners of the Grand Canyon 75th Anniversary Contest at the magazine's annual Spring Sale on April 9, 1994. (The contest appeared in the February issue; the answers were published in the May issue.) All winners were notified.

First Prize: Robert Diakow of Farmington, MI, won a seven-day rafting trip for two down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. ARA Leisure Services' Wilderness River Adventures provided the rafting trip, and America West Airlines provided round-trip air transportation to Phoenix.

Second Prize: Karen Girard of Cumming, GA, won a Friends of Arizona Highways' Photo Workshop for two on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Third Prize: Wayne Gragnano of Buena Park, CA, won a 35mm Nikon camera, a Hasselblad camera bag and accessories, and a brick of Fuji Velvia film.

Fourth Prize: Tom Huntington of Flagstaff, AZ, won a three-day, two-night stay for two at Maswik Lodge on the South Rim of the Canyon, provided by Grand Canyon National Park Lodges, plus bus tours of the East and West Rims and a round-trip Grand Canyon Railway train ride between Williams and the South Rim.

Bluegrass Championship November 11-13; Wickenburg The 15th annual Four Corner States Bluegrass Festival & Fiddle Championship presents entertainment and competition in 13 music categories along with arts and crafts displays and food booths. Be sure to allow time to check out the local sights, including historic Frontier Street with its Desert Caballeros Western Museum. Event admission ranges from $6 to $19. Information: 684-5479.

Emmett Kelly, Jr. Days November 11-13; Tombstone We reckon Tombstone's known for two things: being the site of the infamous shoot-out near the O.K. Corral and the hometown of the famous clown who's celebrating his birthday at this annual happening. Besides the birthday party and a clown contest for adults and youngsters (one fee covers both events), there'll also be a parade, a clown school, and gunfight reenactments. Information: 457-3421.

Navajo Rug Show November 18-20; Tucson This show and sale, to be held at downtown's Southwest Parks and Monuments Association Bookshop, will feature rugs from Arizona has the only known population of desert-nesting bald eagles in the United States. Cliff-dwelling eagles are unique to the state. The 27 nesting pairs live along rivers and lakes in the upper Sonoran Desert. Arizona also supports more than 200 migrating eagles in winter.

Thanksgiving Parade November 24; Fountain Hills

Not only does Fountain Hills boast of having the world's tallest fountain (560 feet), it also offers something for modern-day Pilgrims to do on this holiday besides eat: the comfy community east of Scottsdale hosts the only turkey-day parade in the state. The procession gets rolling at 9 A.M. and features about 100 entries, including floats and marching bands. Even Santa shows up, riding in a white carriage. Free. Information: 837-1654.
