An international beer competition has named a Phoenix-area brewery the best in Arizona for 2016 — and it's not the watering hole you might expect.

Dubina Brewing Co., located near 67th Avenue and Bell Road in Glendale, took home the state's top prize from the New York International Beer Competition. Dubina isn't as well-known as breweries such as Four Peaks Brewing Co. in Tempe and Beaver Street Brewery in Flagstaff, but it reigned supreme anyway.

Dubina Brewing has been in business since 2013. Owner Jared Dubina told KTAR last week that the brewery focuses on "historical beers," many of which trace their origins to the Dubina family's Czech heritage. Dubina is a third-generation American whose great-grandfather emigrated from the Czech Republic and opened bars in Chicago. Dubina's grandfather then opened a bar in the Phoenix area.

The brewery also won bronze awards for two of its beers, the Milk Stout and Grandpa’s Pils a Czech Pilsner. Its food menu includes appetizers, salads, bratwurst and burgers.

Dubina Brewing is located at 17035 N. 67th Avenue, Suite 6, in Glendale. It's open Tuesdays through Sundays. For more information, call 623-412-7770 or visit www.dubinabrewing.com.
